are there any differences between the new 14.5" shock, will it fit all models? are all the old style 16.5 and all the new ones are 14.5"? thanks | ||

A 14.5" will fit a 14.5" bike. *Fit*, but not all the same. There are different spring and valving rates, for different models. An S3T shock will be 'stiffer' than an M2L shock, because an S3T is rated for a higher GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating - "more stuff") than an M2L is. Can you bolt it on and ride it? Sure. But it's gonna handle differently depending on which setup it has inside. | ||

Hey you should also remember that there is also a LOW model out there and that shock is unique. I have one and that shock is UNIQUE. | ||

What is the length difference between the M2 & M2L? Is there a different front mounting bracket for the M2 & M2L & what is the measured difference? | ||

I thought M2 and M2L had the same shock, size-wise, and only the front bracket was different. I can imagine the spring rate is stiffer on the M2L to keep it from bottoming so easily... I should research that, since I have an M2L that I want to turn into an M2...being 6'4" and all  | ||

OK Drag yer parts books out again. This is for the rear shocks. M2 (2002) part # K0431.9 and M2L (2002) K0410.01A4A. 2001 M2L's should be the same. Us M2L owners really have to look at the parts books and part numbers. The bracket is the same but the rear and front suspension does differ. | ||

OH and also the M2L ctr to ctr bolt measurement is slightly different on the rear shock. My notes have it at 15 1/8 to 15 1/4. My M2L is a couple miles away at my Friends shop for the winter. | ||

Well that would make sense, seems like the suspension was an inch shorter (longer shock body moving the swingarm higher) and the seat about the same, giving a seat height that was about two inches shorter than the standard M2. Are all 16.5's the same though? I've never read about anyone having any trouble fitting an old exposed spring [WP] shock in place of the newer long bodied Showa shocks, so I've assumed they are all interchangeable (with consideration to the various spring rates and such mentioned above by Rat). | ||

so would the X1 and M2/M2L rear shocks be valved more similar then say the X1 and an S3? Also, I was never aware there was an M2L.... Did the M2L have shorter front forks as well? or just a lowered rearend? (Message edited by purpony on January 24, 2011) | ||

Purpony, the M2L also had shorter front forks, a different (uncomfortable) seat, and a shorter side stand to account for the lower height. On a side note, back in the early days of owning my M2L, I had no idea that the seats were different. The threads used to secure the seat to the screw on the frame (where you can unscrew the seat to remove it) stripped on my first seat, and when it was replaced under warranty, they screwed up and replaced it with the M2 standard seat.
