I am moving to Oregon next month and have a real dilemma;

The moving people say that I must drain all fuel from the bike before it can go in their van. They would really prefer that I remove the tank and ship that separately.

However, I have heard cautions against draining the fuel because it has fuel injection.

Also, I don't know the correct procedure for removing the tank due to the high-pressure fuel lines, etc.

So, what should I do?

1. Siphon as much fuel out of the tank as I can but leave a tiny bit in the tank to keep the fuel pump happy?

2. Siphon all of the fuel out of the tank and run it until it stops due to fuel starvation to keep the movers happy?

3. Remove the tank? If so, how?

4. Ship by another carrier at my own cost? (Best quote was $765.00 Sarasota to Portland)

If that is the only way, I will take option #4 but I would prefer to send it with my household stuff if possible.

Easy one.

Call haulbikes.com

They let you ship your bike intact.

I am not a master mechanic, let me say that from the start.
But let me add that I own a 99S3 and beat the piss out of it (its a drag bike), and I've removed the tank many times.

Its not that bad really
All that I've done in the past, and will continue to do, is:
remove seat
remove tail section
remove the bolt that holds the spiked clamps on the tank
lift back of tank to get clearance to take front off
then just undo the hose clamps and connector for fuel pump
You'll have a hose going from tank to fuel filter
and then fuel filter to injector area
simple, but the clamps that come on the bike from factory are a bit of a bitch, not standard worm gears

Again, Im not a mechanic, and I've never read the repair manual on how to do it by the book (i do own the manual)
But I've taken the tank and all hoses off several times with zero issue afterwards.

Easy thing would be to remove tank, drain excess fuel from lines and go from there. Hell, maybe leave some fuel in the lines going to injectors and fuel filter, put a plug in the end with a clamp on it. Then pop the tank back on with nothing plugged up (tank to fuel filter hose and FI connector)

Time wont be much, I've removed the tank and all fuel line at the track and put it all back together in about 20 minutes and that wasnt rushing.

Just my opinions on the matter
Good luck on whatever you choose to do brother and I'll be happy to help in any way if you would like

Steve, Thank you for recommending Haulbikes.

Haulbikes will do it for $675.00 from zone 2 to zone 7 so that is $90.00 cheaper than my other quote.

That is very good but I am short of cash so I am still trying to figure out how to ship it with my other stuff but, if that is not possible, I definitely will use Haulbikes.

Thanks again,

Dave

www.uship.com

You solicit bids based on what you want to ship. It's worked for me, and proved to be pretty economical if you can wait for good pricing/quotes to come in. Who you choose will determine what prep work will need to be done.

I used these guys http://www.freightcenter.com/?_kk=FreightCenter&_k t=e85d01e3-5dd9-46b2-b7bf-dba1c2cacda3&gclid=CP7Y1 cySzqYCFQRvbAodfC4sIw

If there is a freight shipping hub near you, You can drop the bike off at the hub for a huge discount.

I shipped my bike from Utah to California for $350

I trust you are going to drive your car or pickup out here to ORYGUN (you need to pronounce the state name correctly) sounds like a reason to buy a motorcycle trailer.

Yup,

I'll be driving my E 150 with a 1970 Triumph inside and 3 more old Triumphs on the trailer but not until the house is sold.

That's why I am planning to ship my Buell now so I will have a bike to ride between now and whenever the house is sold.

The housing market in Florida is not good for sellers so it might be a while.

Joe, I like the idea of riding I10 west and then PCH up the coast but I have to start my new job and just don't have the time.

Here's another option, since you are driving your truck anyway, rent a U-Haul trailer.

It's about $15. per day, bungee a cover around it, and drive straight through with nap times in the rest areas. Straight through will lower your cost on the trailer and keep your bike with you---in plain sight! As you are an owner of unique motorcycles, you know the value of keeping them close by better than anyone else.

Considering your $ situation, that is what I'd do.

Scratch that thought above...the more I think about it, the more I'd consider renting a moving van that could hold all my bikes and the minimum amount of material possessions you really NEED, give/sell the rest and take off.

Best wishes---Steve

Running the bike out of gas might mess up your AVF, draining the tank without starting it will be just fine. I have had my tank off many times. Don't sweat it.

NEVER transport a bike with a cover on it.

Wind makes covers flap.

Against your paint.

Think "sandpaper".

Leave it uncovered, and just wash it once you get it there...washing is easier than wetsanding and buffing : )

Call them on the phone for a quote. Mine was supposed to be over $700 from CA to NY according to the website, on the phone they quoted me something like $560. I can't remember exact numbers but it was substantial. Bike stays in tact, includes insurance, they were great to work with.

Mark,

That is a great idea. If I can get a better price for shipping the injected S-3T and then ship the M-2 with my household stuff things will work out nicely.

Thanks for that.

Yeah, I can't remember the exact prices, but I know the difference was right around $130 less than I was figuring on based on the website.

I know it was $130 because I crashed Doerman's 1125R while I was in California and that happened to be exactly how much in parts I had to buy to make it right, lol.

BTW - You can not only ship your bike as is, but feel free to stuff the saddlebags with as much stuff as you'd like, too. Just can't have anything like a tank bag or something on there.
