Just a quick question I can't seemed to get answered for some reason. Will a 1976 XL1000 motor fit into an older Buell frame and if so, which year of frame/frames would allow this. - Pat

no the motor mounts wont work , they way they hand the motor from the front head , also rear mount is wrong , i believe you could technincally get the cases mounted if the were 83 and up ironhead for sure possibly 82 .

If you had mid a 80's and up motor, and added the buell heads, No problem....

I'm all for it. I'd love to see a chopper guy with a buell power plant, when he got butt spanked though the curves by a lowly sporty powered buell.....PRICELESS!


Bet I could start a fight over that.... I love being an instigator.

Lol, but that's still an evo engine, with buell heads its almost a tuber engine, I know there were improvements through the years but all in all it wouldn't be much different

That's one thing that's kind of bothered me about Harley. You'd think a 1200cc motor would be a bit faster...

I'm not really complaining though, because the noise and character of the engine is simply fun.

Aside from the rear mounts being in the wrong place,(which could probably be modified) and the heads not having mounts,(which could probably be welded in place) I'd be WAAAYYY concerned about the stresses places on the head bolts and cyl base nuts created by hanging an ironhead sporty motor the same way a tuber motor is. Perhaps an industrious fellow could modify a tuber frame to include downtubes, an XB style mono shock, and some sort of trick exhaust, but then what you'd have would be...unique...

Well, the Evo Sporty was never meant to be hung off a frame either, and it works fine, aside from the occasional broken front mount/bolts. I think my favorite ironhead XL hybrid is the "Harton."

I have ridden several Tritons, Triumph engines in the exact style norton frame used in that Harton. They handle remarkably like a tube frame Buell. They are cool. They also cost a small fortune to do one right. Ride that Harton and you will understand why the Buell has the rubber isolators. Steve

Quad leading shoe...I had a CR-77 honda that had a similar setup..they work very well when properly set up and bedded in.

An EVO Sportster engine is the same as a TUBE FRAME BUELLengine, just different mounting brackets ...

OF COURSE THE TUBE FRAME RUNS BETTER !!!

yea, like i said early in the thread, the 76 is an ironhead engine.

Are you going to have a starter on it or kick? would the kicker even clear the frame?

Why do you say that Buellistic? Are you assuming because it is then a dual carb, or because exhaust runners would be closer to matching length and bend?

Why not adapt the engine to fit an existing tuber frame? There's almost always a few on fleabay. It looks like adapting the rear mounting block wouldn't be too hard...the front mount looks like it'd be a little tricky to figure out...but it still seems a lot easier than starting from scratch.

Hey Easy, while the Atlas and Manx Norton "Featherbed" frames were solid mount, the later Commando's had rubber mounting not unlike the Buell's. There have been a few isolastic Featherbeds made, usually with Commando engines. An Isolastic mounted Ironhead in a Featherbed or Featherbed copy would be really cool. May i ask where you are located? Steve

i thought buell tried dual carbs on a bike and found it not suitable.

dual carb's are always suitable.... what is not suitable is short intake tracts on 4 strokes.

The DUAL CARBURETOR set up came from the XR 750 RACE'ing ENGINEs ...

Another option is the putting the DUEL CARBURETORs on the LEFT SIDE of the HEADs like was done on the KNUCKLE and PAN HEAD engines of decades past ...
