Got my new to me 2000 X1 Lightning delivered yesterday.

Warmed up the garage, started both bikes and got them both warmed up good, then started doing a walkaround on the 2000.

Noted a puddle right under the rear shock reservoir line that goes to the shock body (by the way, it's the 14.7" recall that is installed) and traced it up to the forward-facing seal on the front of the reservoir.

Oil was thin and tasted (yes i tasted it!) like mineral oil, so here's the questions. 1.)Could the shock seal that is weeping be nothing more than the shock oil expanding and temporarily popping the seal?
2.) Is the shock oil, whatever it is, hygroscopic, and may have absorbed water during storage, thus the weeping as it froze in the reservoir and possibly destroyed the seal?

Appreciate your ideas and what you might recommend i do...thanks.

Steve

Buy a shock.

Works or Penske, both user-rebuildable.

Yours isn't going to get any healthier. Sorry.}

Rat: You did not answer either question.

I want a Penske shock, but i need a shock that will get me through the next season

Is a rebuild possible on these Showa shocks? If so, does anyone know where I can buy a seal kit?

The shock is not rebuildable by the end user. There are a couple of suspension outfits Aftershocks in Polo Alto Ca and Race Tech don't know where they are, think they maybe a chain. Eather can rebuild it. In a couple of messages $250 came up for a rebuild. Good luck.

I had mine done by Phil at Aftershocks, several years ago, good work, but I have had trouble locating his current business offices... They went into business with a [Kawasaki] dealership, I believe and now the link doesn't get you there anymore.

Check with Racetech if you can't get anywhere with a search for Aftershocks. Maybe you'll have a local Racetech shop that can get you a faster turn around time on the rebuild than shipping it off to CA.

Sorry for not spelling it out.

If yours is leaking now, it will only get worse. Quickly. It probably will turn into a pogo stick well before the halfway point this season.

Aftermarket rebuilds are an option, and another option is ebay - there are a lot of dealers liquidating Buell stock and I've seen quite a few shocks out there. My main concern with those being seal condition. Yes, they are new...as in never used...but the seals are just as old and potentially dry as many that are on the road now and leaking (like yours).

You can try your luck with a used shock, but I wouldn't spend a lot on it. Think "disposable".

I have a Penske on my S1W that I bought used from the race team, and it's really more shock than a street hack like me needs. It's amazing and super-adjustable, but I know I only use about 10% of its capability.

I have a Works on the S2 and love it. Good shock, easy to tune, great adjustability, and much more price-friendly than the Penske.

I got the Works because my stock shock was leaking and pogo-ing, and I had the same debate you're having now. It was a lot of money (I got it from Al at American Sport Bike and I have no complaints, it's just an expensive component)...but I never have to buy another one. Ever. If it leaks, I rebuild it myself and have the nitrogen recharged at a local speed shop. Done.

Looks like i might have two options before springing for the aftermarket shock.

o Tri Valley Moto out in Livermore, CA might do a Showa 14.7" rebuild
o If HD/Buell dealers will still replace recalled 16"er, then maybe one of them has a 14.7" in inventory somewhere.

I've looked on the BadWeb parts classifieds and e-bay with no luck.

Right now, as the shock is, there is tremendous pogo-ing at the rear. Never noticed this at the dealer, just after my garage was warmed up and i was doing my once-over on it. Bike, when initially inspected by me at the dealer, was parked outside, that is why i asked the initial questions as this issue wasn't manifest when i originally decided to buy it. Another life lesson learned. Never buy a bike you cannot ride first. Fortunately, this lesson isn't deja vu.

i wasn't planning to put any money into this one this year, but wanted to ride with 3 of my brothers this year down to CO, UT, and maybe further west to see a sister who lives in CA. The grand plan was to have a bike ready for one of my brothers who doesn't currently own a bike. He lives in PA and would fly from PA to Wisconsin, where the third brother would then ride to CO with us to pick up with brother four and then all four of us ride the southwest!

i've got 7 brothers and three of us currently ride, so i'm hoping that we can make riding together an annual event.

So, if anybody has a 14.7" laying around collecting dust, i'm willing to take a chance with it. Please let me know. And thanks for the support too.

I'm about to invest in a Penske "kit" consisting of a new shock and a fork "kit".I believe the app applies to our Buell spec.Maybe you want my old Showa Shock.Does it even fit a 2k?

You can change the front mount bracket and use a 16" if you want. That's the only difference between the two...just get the bracket too, if you get a 16" shock.

Greg didn't specify what length shock he's got, it's possible, even probable that he's got the 14.7" if his bike's had all the service work/recalls done.

My Y2K Cyclone came with the 16" but was eventually given a 14.7" under one of the various recalls, back in '02 if my memory serves correctly.

If his won't work I may be able to help.

The leaker that is on it right now is the 14.7", so the right bracket is in place at this time.

Thanks for the offers. i've also e-mailed a Bueller that is an airline pilot who lives in Tennessee about his 14.7" that he has. Found that one in the classifieds.

Sure do wish that i could ride this bike out and discover what else i need to do to it. It was the instant sexiness of it being stock that overrode my practical curiousity. Alas, beauty is only skin deep!

I had RaceTech rebuild mine recently. Less than $200 including shipping there and back. Turned it pretty quickly too.

That's a good price. Was that just the rebuild?

There's this one..I'd ask about the mileage and specifics though.

That was a stock rebuild with new seals. You can get upgrades too. I went for cheap. The rebuild was cheaper than used ones with unknown history are going for. Give them a call and get specifics.
