i bought a carbon fiber air cleaner cover with out a back mounting plate and filter. there appear to be several types of back plates to air cleaners. i am guessing a flat one is what i need. help with any specifics on year or model to look for? | ||

Get the K&N air filter that fits the AIR CLEANER COVER ... Make a TEMPLATE using the AIR FILTER for size ... Then decide the position/angle you want to mount it on the CARBURETOR ... Cut the CARB. opening and mounting screw holes ... Take it to machine shop/aluminum fabricator and have them make the back plate out of a piece of aluminum ... | ||

Or you could contact Al at American Sport bike and see about buying the NRHS replacement backing plate. They are really nicely made. The Buell race backing plate is prone to warping. They are still good but the NRHS piece is great. | ||

The Buell Race part, which is flat, and is the one I have is obsolete but if you find one it will also require a 5/8" aluminum spacer which is obsolete. But Kuryakyn makes essentially the same darn spacer for their air cleaners. You can get one of those, but they come in 3 different thicknesses and you'll just need the 5/8" one. The HurricaneFlow filter backing plate (NRHS) is one piece, no separate spacer and it has a built-in short velocity stack while the Buell race part is a separate plastic part - but you can get an extended one from american sports bike. You'll need the cover mounting supports too. Those are something you can improvise, see page 10 here for a rough picture of the parts. I think the stock airbox cleaner does a fine job. It keeps the bike (relatively)quiet, can be painted, keeps the oil blowby off your leg. Also, if you have a low-side wreck, the "breadbox" air cleaner acts as a sort of frame protector and protects your expensive side mounted carb. The race cleaner and the "Force" bent neck will rip it out the bike in the event of a low side. The race part is just that - something to run on the track, where it's meant to be cleaned and maintained after every racing day. Put a K&N replacement in the stock one and just ride it. The stock equipment on the tube frame Buells is of excellent design and quality. Even in stock form, the M2 is a loud, rumbling monster that scares old ladies, sets off car alarms and wakes up babies. My opinion, based on my ten years of owning an M2. |
