From what I can tell, my front PM wheel is trashed. It still holds air, but why risk it, you know? I could try banging it back into shape, but aluminum doesn't handle that very well. Anyway, to the point. I can get a stock style front wheel pretty cheaply, about half the price of the PM. Is it safe to use a stock wheel up front and still keep the rear PM? Also, do the PM and the stock style take the same size tire, bearings, other hardware? | ||

That's nice and all, but I could get the stock style for half that price and I could get it right now. If it's safe, I see no reason not to save the $100 and buy the cheaper stock style wheel. Saving another 100 to get the PMs could end up being difficult right now. I'm working part time during the semester after all and I just want my bike back on the road  | ||

My front PM wheel is at the rim shop. getting straitened and trued. and getting some dings out. cost of repair = $150 Cost of a new pm wheel off ebay delivered = $260 check out the price to get it repaired by a reputable rim shop before buying a new one if money is tight. | ||

You should not have any problem using the different rims. I would trust a different style that is straight and true. | ||

One advantage of stock wheels is that they are lighter than the PMs. Less unsprung weight.  | ||

If you look around the St Paul e-bay store, they have some Castalloy (stock) wheels for $200 a set, white only. Could be another option ...... | ||

Buellbozo said it well. Here's this if it compares to your wheel replacement cost. $130-$160 according to their basic pricing, welding cracks adds to the price. I had a wheel fixed by this company after a front end collision on my bike in 2002. That's pretty cool, but it looks like, in the end, I was worried about nothing. I've never had a bend in a rim before, so I thought it was screwed. After having a more experienced friend look at it, he said it was fine. I knocked it back in most of the way with a small sledge and some cardboard for protection and all is well. I got it up to freeway speeds today without so much as a shake (apparently still balanced?) I'll probably order a new wheel in the future anyway and see if the semi-bent one will sell online. |
