Hey guys I came across the first of many speed bumps on restoring the X1M. The lower chin fairing is so beat up I decided to replace with another one but the catch is there is this aftermarket shifter on the bike and the mount that attaches to the shifter is solid on the fairing. Anybody have one of these shifters? and how in the heck do I get it off to install this piece on the new fairing?

My guess is, it's just stuck. Get a small, thin flat blade screwdriver and wedge the part away from the fairing. Probably just years of gunk (and maybe some adhesive if there was a rattle problem) keeping it stuck on there.

If that doesn't work...get a bigger hammer! : )

Although, in the second pic, it does look like there is a roll pin or a sleeve of some sort stuck in the left end. From the inside of the fairing, insert a flat screwdriver and tap it with a hammer, see if you can push that insert back out.

Spray it down with WD40, or the like, let it soak & then try to pry it apart. It looks, as Ratbuell says, like it is "sleeved". If it is, pushing the sleeve out should release it.
Pic 3 shows a lot of "spider cracks" around the front "hole". This would suggest that the bolt into the engine has been extremely overtightened. Ditto for the rear "hole".
Failing all that cut the old chin fairing off and dig about in it!
Good luck. let us know how you get on with it.
Chris C.

Rat and Chris "I GOT IT OFF!" Thank you both and I didn't destroy the fairing either. They were sleeved with rubber grommets. I'm going to try the WD on the other 2 grommets on the other side of the fairing. Got the shifter back on the bike the fairing I bought is in better condition and I got some touch up paint to spiffy it up before installing it. Now I got to get the chewed in half battery cable off (+) one

Babired...

I will fully refund your pulley purchase, send you my stock X1 shifter (you ARE going full stock, aren't you?), and offer my eternal love and devotion if you want a stock shifter that doesn't interfere in anyway with your chin fairing. And belongs on a stock restored X1.

And if these other birds wise you up to how hard those Bankes are to come by these days, I'll throw in some cash to boot!

Pretty Please???
If it helps, one of my ex-wives is a Kathleen...

Oh no I want the pulley cover If you want to trade the Banke shifter and brake peg and linkage for the OEM brake and shifter with linkage its on! So keep the money and I'll remove both gear shift and rear brake hardware off of the bike and send them back to you in the same box in exchange for the OEM hardware, nuts bolts everything included. DEAL?

YES! YES! YES!!!

And I'll send the OEM parts in the same box back to you. Cool with you??? do you want to include my flawless stock derby cover for your Pegasus one? I'm good with that, too.

I'll pm you now with the delivery confirmation# on the pulley cover.

I LOVE da Babired!!!

okay before you get real excited I had to dig out the old rubber grommets on the hardware pictured above so the inside half of the hardware was in a vise tightened down pretty good so there are scratches on the inside piece and the grommets are gone. I still have the pieces so you can get the measurments off of them.
Sorry I'm gonna keep the derby cover. When I got Babired my X1R I have, I still have the original derby cover from it. I'm keeping both since they don't make them anymore.
last question for you I'm hoping its the original shifter with the bar that goes over instead of under the shifter shaft and rod from 2000, in 2001 they made them different and got rid of the big shaft and rod that pants always got hung up on.

Not at all concerned with scratches or torn grommets. This is better than Xmas!

yeah come on and send them what I have on Milly will totally go with your bike. I have another piece too you might like that I found when I took off the lower chin fairing I'm trying to find the name of the part but it replaces your 2 tone BUELL piece right above the rear brake pedal you have it pictured in above photo its called the swing arm drive support. I have one with a lightening bolt on it. I can take a photo of it tonight if you want to trade again for this

It's still warm enough that I'm riding everyday, and will pull and swap out all the bits on the same day I get yours. You should get the pulley cover wed. or thur.

BTW...Notice my "Ghost Pegasus" polished into my swingarm???

I wanna t shirt that sez "Does Anal Retentive Have A Hyphen?"

okay no problem my X1M is not ridable now I'm in the process of taking it most of it apart, cleaning and making a list of replacement hardware now. I don't plan on riding her until 2011
I love the ghost Pegusas how did you do this? I also like the air filter system you have. It would be cool to have something like that in silver
okay chum up on the t-shirt thing cause I'm not getting it

When I got the bike, the swingarm had been poorly sprayed black. I'm an old tool&die guy, and love polishing metal. I hate chrome. It takes no personal involvement to
wipe off a bit of chrome...it's the easy way out.
When I started on the swingarm, I started with 120 grit, and made sure my last passes were one direction, and smooth. Then I put a Pegasus sticker on, polished out the rest, and pulled the sticker.
Wait'll next spring when you see what I'm gonna do when I polish my rear subframe...
This is a secret, so don't tell anyone, but I'm hoping to end up with a herd of (smaller) "ghost" Pegasus' running down both sides of the subframe. One of those "Gotta look twice" kinda things.

As for the anal retentive hyphen question...Well, I guess ya gotta be one to get the joke. Ask someone close to you whom you think of as an "anal retentive twit". I did sailboat rigging and cosmetics for years, and they used to call me the anal retentive boatboy!!!

Air filter is a unit from Al @ American Sport Bike. Center piece comes shiny, I just painted mine.

I was having the crappiest of Monday mornings, right down to the GF pasiin' kidney stones looped on pain pills (THEY ARE NOT affecting me!!!) And I won't bore ya'll with any of the rest of it, but...

Boy did my Monday change for the better thanks to Babired.

Of course, this is blatant sucking up just in case she starts wonderin' if I'm worthy of such a great deal.

I'm not. But Thanks Anyway!

we are good and I hope your GF passes them stones I had a friend who had that last year and I couldn't even imagine the pain she is going thru. Morphine was the drug of choice I know that! here is the photo of the brace support. Getting the bike back to original means more to me than any aftermarket part so I am all for the trade no thoughts of going back

Kathleen, I'm gonna pass on the frame connecting brace.

Just to be clear...we're keeping our own footpegs? Yes? No?

But HAVE I GOT A DEAL FOR YOU!!!

I will sacrifice my functioning, OEM, proper recall shock for whatever that piece of non-stock garbage is that you have for a shock showin it's ugly non-OEM self down there in the corner of the brake pedal pic. Poor Millie...her drawers ain't factory suspended.

Never realized how great a guy I was, didja?

I hope I'm not gonna be considered a heathen for "de-stocking" my X1M. I' ve never owned a bike I could leave alone. It's just part of what I love about the sport.

Mine will always keep it's #535 gas cap and points cover, and will always be unstock, but I love pointing out to those who aren't Buell savvy that "Hey man, this is one of only 800 built!"

Yeah, Millie Love for sure. And as for Babired...There's a ton of good karma comin' your way, FO SHO!

cool guys LOL I have secret reason to get mine back to close to stock since It was the first Buell I ever bought back in 2000 Then the bikes name was Babisilver it was #289 and after 3,600 miles some A-hole drunk driver smashed into me and broke the bike into 2 pieces so Milly is my second Millennium #650 I waited 10 years to get it back and now I have it! Milly is my 5th Buell since 2000 : ) I can't get off of them....I look at other brands and none of them compare. K
