ok, as some of you know my M2 it's is almost dead. the engine is seized, and pretty much i'm selling a bunch of parts to rebuild it. i sold it to a friend a month ago, and i bought it back this week -i know i'm insane- i'm selling pretty much everything but frame and engine. and i will start a project that i want to be proud of (i'm a mechanic and i have done some project bikes in the past) but to be honest, i don't have the knowledge in older Buells like some of you guys have. anyway, what i will try to do pretty much is keep the rake, trail, and length of a tuber, making my own frame. engine will be used as a stressed member and a frame without lower rails (a challenge indeed). no chopper crap in here, i'm talking something like a confederate but not that extravagant, maybe normal forks wheels, or even a "girder" front like on a "britten" i'm thinking to put the front end of an xb the swingarm of an xb, and my own frame, and to make things simpler use the M2 frame (measurements) as a "jig". or i would love to design a tubular swingarm a la MH900 ducati. (even with oil on it, that could be pretty cool) anyway,i have some questions here: 1) where can i get chromoly tube for my frame. 2)i need exact measurements of rake, trail, weight of different tuber frames (if any have this info) for example: similarities and difference between x1, s1 and m2. and does anyone knows the thickness of the "tubes" on the tuber frames (sic)? i know that the x1 has a "stiffer" neck at the front, well at least i have read about it. (published by pb "uk thor's hammer obsession") 3)has anyone thought about a carbon perimeter brake? front and back? 4) what about no front forks? "a la bimota tesi 3d". now imagine that? a non ducati v twin with no forks. what about using a "trellis" frame or making one? 5) or a single fork like in the radical designs of James Parker or the old Gp's ELFS. now, i make you think didn't i? see, i'm tired of always reading and hearing people in other countries referring at the riders in the USA as "ignorant bikers" riding choppers and not knowing pretty much nothing about bikes, or not liking "sport bikes". i mean no offense, but everyone outside the USA thinks this is "harley Country" and in a way it is, -i ride a 2010 street bob myself- but i have owned, ducatis, triumphs, rice burners, etc. and have built several bikes, but i really want this one to be special, it will take probably a bit 1 or 2 years, but don't care now that i'm getting older (36), i'm starting to have more patience. so what do you guys think? | ||

Hey, just my .02, but Erik pretty much did all the work for you WRT frame design. Why not start out with the frame & engine you have, upgrade brakes, wheels, bodywork, ad nauseum until you have the custom you want? Unless you're a chassis engineer, you will almost surely end up getting the worst half of the deal trying to improve on handling and frame stress. Just a thought... | ||

i appreciate the comments, and i know i'm not discovering the wheel. that's what i said i will mimic the tube frame, pretty much keeping, rake, trail angles but on a new frame... we'll se how it goes, it will take some time. in fact today i got a xb swingarm, i know (it has been done before) -there's nothing new under the sun- i like the xb swingarm design and shock and it will serve for my purposes. thanks for the response | ||

If I was going through all that work I'd make a tuber frame that fit tuber bodywork but XB swingarm, XB engine, XB isolators, and top it off with an XB front end. Basically a Tiber with the XB refinements. | ||

that's exactly what i'm thinking! more less... the engine will be still "the old one" but will be 90 ci. (rebuilding as right now) | ||

Don't understand the need to build an all new frame as it is already a stiff frame and there is no bottom rail, plus the engine is already a stressed member, is it not with the tie bars? As said, Erik already did the work. As far as grafting XB pieces with the tube frame, look for Joesbuell on here. His frame was an S3 which is same as M2 essentially. He has some vids on youtube also. I know some others have done it and are doing it. Someone on here is making a pretty trick tube swingarm too, but I don't remember whom. | ||

well the point of building a new frame is that i'll be using the "frame" as a gas tank as well. yes, i know the XB has it, and that i'm not discovering the wheel. but let's be honest -well at least this is my point of view- that frame is a engineering marvel, but ugly as hell. that's why i like tubers in the first place. thanks for the response, and i did check "JoesBuell" (for months I've been reading the posts and studying, every single detail) about the "trick" tuber swingarm, haven't checked, yet.(would like to know, who, when, and how? -just joking- thanks again and best regards! ok, it seems that i'm getting a pair of XB wheels but they're from a 2009 XB12X, the measurements are: 17x3.5 front 17x5.5 rear are the xb12x wheels different than any XB9/ XB12? or are they the same?... i believe they're the same, just want to be sure before i go ahead and get them... thanks |
