I absolutely love the look of the full race fairing for the S1! There are some extrodinary examples out there I will post a few so I apologise if I am infringing any trademarked work but I just love the bikes and wanted to show them they deserve to be seen.

Here is the work I speak of its made by airtech and it is about the only produced set of body work out there that I have seen. Some nice custom work though.

fairing1

I have a black S1 and this bike just gives me shivers! I know the racers used this stuff alot or atleast that is what it seems. This bike is just plain SEXY! I love that black sheen.

I am curios of those who use them (racing or street) what problems or solutions and advice would you give on them? The main obvious concern would be overheating? Other areas of interest are the breather setups used the ones I have seen use the round type filter system. I think the fairing looks better without the breather exposed.

I know alot of the S1 race bikes are getting or in alot of cases already gotten set aside in favor of the XB platform. I am curious if any of you guys may have an extra old set of body spare body work sitting around in the back of the shop some where that you have been wanting to move out for a while now. Give me a shout!

Otherwise post up if you got something to add. Gotta be a few of em out there! This stuff would just be awesome to wrap a punched out motor in for some bite in the bark!

Fuscat,
I'm with you on this. I've always liked the look of that fairing and seat. It's been on my shopping list since I got my S1, but I haven't been able to justify their price.
I guess it's illegal though for two people to go halves in one, make a mold from it and then make two new carbon fiber ones, keeping the original on the shelf in case another mold was ever needed..... : ]

Well,I can speak from experience as that is the fairing on my Bonneville bike.I had issues with my race header coming very close to fairing, had to use reflective material on fairing, and the Buell race muffler has a different outlet so I had to make a cutout in pan.I never did figure out how they got the aircleaner set-up it comes with to come close to working.I ended up with a cut out like the pictured bike. The wind screen is tiny, fortunately Gustaffson in Florida has a bigger one.The headlight mounting is non existent. When I called and asked if I was missing parts they told me they just silicone it in(WTF????)Customer service was abyssmal at best and went downhill from there. So,be prepared to make whatever you need cuz Airtech ain't gonna be there for you.
And the owner of Airtech was at Bonneville in 2002,saw my bike and was bragging to his buds,I had to bite my cheek to keep from cussing him out.

Jim,
Have you seen/signed anything that says you can't take a mold from it? Wanna make your's a bit cheaper for yourself?

>>>Customer service was abyssmal at best and went downhill from there.

AirTech's claim to fame is consistancy. They have always had poor service.

I'd pop molds off it in a minute.

Peter stop teasing! I would think the CF sets would have to be 3 to 4 times more expensive?? Everything I ever see that is CF is outragous let alone an entire S1 Wrap. Oh how sweet it be though. I am interested!

FMJ Unfortunate to hear that! To think such a bueatifull looking piece of work to not be supported. The positive to come from that really shows in the output of the owners of these bikes. Gorgeous bike Jim do you have other pictures close up to share? Those pipes look sweet too! : ) I have to say the work would be worth it in my opinion! And it seems I am not the only one!

Fuscat,
If you just want a low-tech carbon fiber piece, then it wouldn't cost much more to lay it up than a glass fiber one. The process is the same, so it's only the extra cost of the material.
The good stuff that you buy ready made, has probably been done by a more expensive process. Vacuum forming for example. I was just thinking of doing it the cheap way ; )
The mirrors are from Roadracing.

Cheaper the better!! ; )

That site has some nice pieces but I didn't see the mirrors. No prices though.. I had never seen that site before.

I run the tail section on my S1 and it fits pretty well, but I'm with Jim about the quality of the airtech parts and the support. I have an upper and lower but have not yey tried to fit it. Tail section is a good looking piece that fit well and uses the stock seat...I believe its based on a Aprilia RS250.

Racerx1, is the frame on that S1 modified to accept the '99 and later exhaust?

Yes, its actually a development frame I bought from the Buell race department. Its also a 4 link frame (Early S1's were 3 link, X1's are 5 link). Its actually my road racer I was just screwing around with it on the drag strip. I have a 1" over braced swingarm, Showa forks, and chain drive on it in its present form:

Does any one make mounts or a kit to install this fairing? What a cool look. The cutouts for the pipe and air cleaner look so cool, what a hot rod. Fred

I spoke with Airtech yesterday in search of mounting hardware and they were way less than helpful. Seems as though it was quite a bother to them that I would want to mount one of their fairings on a bike. They refuse to sell anything short of the entire setup. So, off to the shop I went and fabricated my own mounts. Fits good now. The headlight? Geez! It was siliconed in! No mounting hardware. Air clearer? Hmm. Gotta work on that. There's only 2 inches from the carb to the fairing and I don't want to make a hole. If I don't drag this thing on the track too much this year I'd be open to pulling it next fall to pop off a mold with a few desired changes.

What would I do next time? Wait till there's someone making one that's a bit more customer friendly.
