My speedo has been showing approx 10mph slower than it should despite trying everything bar a new speedo, this has resulted in a couple of speeding infringements, so could someone help me with what speed matches what on the rev counter, I know that 2500rpm is 60mph (100kph)but some help with what speed is 3000rpm 3500rpm 4000rpm 4500rpm 5000rpm would be a great help. Many thanks

Two questions,

1.Stock European gearing? I think I saw some data posted on this in the KV years ago, I might be able to dig it out for you.

2.Have you removed the speed sensor from the tranny and cleaned it? (They are magnetic and can pick up a lot of crud that will impede their operation.)

Yes stock gearing even though it made its way to this part of the world ex Japan.
I have cleaned the sensor, checked all other wiring and will one day bite the bullet and get it looked at by an expert, in the meantime I just want to know what speed I am doing by the rev counter in top gear

David,

I thought the owners manual had better info on this, but my 2000 manual only indicates shift points per given road speed, not rpms.

Here's that info anyway, though it's probably may be useless to you at this time:

Upshift
1-2 @15mph (25km/h)
2-3 @25mph (40km/h)
3-4 @40mph (65km/h)
4-5 @50mph (80km/h)

Around here we have a lot of speed limit signs that have a radar detector and a large display to show your actual speed. Perhaps I can just ride past one tomorrow and get some data points of reference for you. Disclaimer is I'm running a Pirelli Scorpion Sync 180 tire on stock cast rims so my numbers may be a bit off from yours. Measuring the circumference of the back tire should give us a point of reference for your comparison.

Otherwise, I'll keep looking for your data online, I think maybe the English Trojan-Horse website may have where I read it, six or so years ago. It was under a discussion about the final gearing and how it affected the road/engine speed. I think maybe Blake had posted a chart here that was derived from that info. Hopefully it's just where I haven't looked, and not buried under years of posts in the archives.

There is a road not to far off with one of those signs, if I can't go for a ride Saturday I can do it Sunday for sure.

I believe posted limit is 40mph so I should be able to get some rpms in a few different gears and speeds to help out. I see your rpm request, there are a lot of speeds available given any particular gear... are there any particular posted speeds that would be best for you to know?

Go to this link and it will give you the speed in gears per 1000rpm.
Hope it helps.
