The short: Had no issues running, parked it for 5 hours, now it turns over but wont start. Every now and then it burns a little fuel and dies. (like 3 combustions at most)

I have no error codes and 12 volts at the battery. I tried jumping it to no avail. I tried replacing the spark plugs too.

I'm guessing that the battery is too low which points to a bad charging system. I'm not sure though. Wouldn't a jump at least get the bike to start if this were the case?

Can you hear the fuel pump pressurize the line when you turn on the ignition?

Yeah, and I checked the line for clogs too. I took off the lines, replaced the old beat up fuel filter, and checked out the seating of the fuel injectors.

Looks like fuel is making its way to the injectors, but no farther. I poured gas into the intake and it burned it without any issues too. Looks like fuel is not reaching the cylinders.

I'll probably see about checking the actual fuel pressure tomorrow. Could the injectors have gone bad? Any other leads?

i had the exact same symptoms on mine, turned out it was bad gas. I filled up, rode for ten miles but would not restart once cooled.
Are the plugs getting wet when you try to start ? if not check the injector wires/connectors, you could pull the injectors out, re connect to fuel line and hit the start button to see if they squirt.

The '99 X1 I recently purchased had a problem that it would not run. Would fire up and run on starter fluid. Pump was running. Pump would pump fuel when the fuel line was removed. Injectors would squirt some fuel when the key was turned on. Still would not start.

I pulled the fuel tank off my S3T and hooked it up to the X1. The bike fired right up and ran. My conclusion was the fuel pump was not building enough fuel pressure (I had no pressure test equipment). I replaced the fuel pump and me and the bike are happy campers!

I suspect it was the fuel pump regulator. Since the pump did run. I replaced the complete pump assembly simply because I didn't want to wait to ride the bike. If it wasn't the regulator, I would have to wait for more parts to be ordered and arrive and I only had time to do the repair once.

Regulator is like $30 part, while the pump is 10 times that amount.

I still love my Fuel Injection!

Damn, autozone wants $150 to rent a fuel pressure tester. I think I'll be doing the squirt test instead.

It better not be a bad pump. I literally wont be able to save up enough money for a part like that until sometime in january. School really limits my ability to earn money...

I had another idea just now. When I got the pump primed up (I can hear it) I pushed the shrader valve under the tank and the fuel came out at a trickle. If the system is supposed to reach 40 something PSI, whouldn't it spray out? Could someone do this with their bike to compare? (this would mean turn the ignition switch to on, listen for the prime, don't start the bike, and then push on the pressure testing valve to see how strongly fuel comes out)

The bike is still at my workplace, so I'm trying to come up with ideas before I drive out there to work on it more.

I don't own a fuel injected Buell, but if the schrader valve is parallel to the path for the injector (i.e. shares the same path), then it should definitely spray out of the schrader when depressed provided that the fuel pump has pressurized the line.

That is a rip off on renting a fuel pressure tester... must be a super nice one. I think I paid like $50 for my fuel pressure gauge (although that was 10+ years ago, but they haven't really changed price much since then) and I've seen cheaper ones. Might be worth purchasing if you own more than one fuel injected vehicle. Either that, or find a neighbor that owns one.

Naw, the buell is the first fuel injected vehicle I've ever worked on. Before this it's been air cooled VWs.

Later tonight I should be able to drain the tank and pull out the pump for inspection. I'm thinking it may have become clogged up after getting gas. I filled up that day and only had issues once the gas had time to settle.

I suspected the fuel pump on mine because when pulling the fuel line off the fuel filter it did not PISS fuel like my S3T did. I figured it was because of low pressure.

Holy crap! My local harley stealership wants 350 or so for a new pump.

The services dept. guy was very helpful though and let me know how to test the fuel pressure regulator. He also said that my symptoms are consistent with pump/regulator problems. The pump still whirrs, so I'm crossing my fingers for a regulator fault...

Sure about that? My experience with AutoZone is that they take a deposit on loaner tools and refund it when the tool is returned.

If they are quoting $350 then they are quoting the whole assembly. You don't need the whole thing. The pump itself should only cost about a $100.

I think someone posted the Walbro part number for the fuel pump a while back. If you could find the Walbro part number, you could probably find the pump online for cheaper than the stealership's cost.

Just did a search and I found a post stating that it was Walbro assembly # 521. The thread also had the following link http://www.fuel-pumps.net/521.html to buy one. You may want to search some more online to find out if anyone has a better price, as well.

Please double check this, as like I mentioned before, I don't own a FI Buell. At least not yet.

I have pressed that valve on several occasions for changing filter, removing tank, etc., and have never had any fuel come out. Not even a hiss. But I never did immediately after priming the line so I assume the pressure is relieved over time.

Does the pump at the end of this thread look right? It's priced at a third of what HD wants for one and the website claims it has the same specs as the one in the Buell manual.

Hahah, I just realized someone else answered my last question.

That one LOOKS like it's what I need... The liters per hour rating is lower than what the manual states though. I wonder if I could go higher instead?

Also, the pump was taken out of the tank and it still runs. If it still makes a normal sound and it seems to push the gas around. Unfortunately, it pushes it right out of the regulator. I wish I could find a source for either an actual buell regulator or some random equivelant.

ah hah! The regulator is definitely the problem. I fashioned a plug to bypass the regulator (mostly) and I got fuel pressure and a running bike. AFV is staying at 100% too, which is cool.

It's not running quite right, but that may have been due to the engine not fully warming. I was impatient... Obviously this is not a permenant fix. I'm waiting for the new part in the mail
