Yet another tuber newbie question:
I got this ss2r from the wild ones auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ewItem&item=180562311344&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK %3AMEWNX%3AIT

thinking it will fit the s1w header since it has a 2.5" inlet, but the angle of the elbow seems slightly too sharp, and the muffler angles into the shock. Am i doing something wrong? or is it specific for '99-'02 models?

thanks

I'm not expert, but I think your question deserves attention.

I read somewhere that there is a very specific way to mount all of your exhaust hardware. I think you may need to re-assemble all of the exhaust in a specific order to make sure the muffler lines up properly.

Don't take my word for it though. Wait for someone with more experience to make a post.

Well I walked out to my S1W and looked at my v&h and the angle doesn't look the same as the picture in the link. yours Looks like it's to sharp of a bend I'm sorry to say.

Is the angle of the elbow less then 90 degrees? You could probably modify it, cut a wedge out of it, and give it a larger angle. I know it is a hassle, but it may be an option. I forgot to see what I have.

yeah i know i could go the modified route, but before i start cutting i'd like to know why it's not working in the first place. i assumed all slip-ons w/ 2.5" inlet would be universal for the tubers, but maybe the angle of the collectors for later tubers is different...

I have both, and will try to compare. Could it possibly be a defective pipe, a blem?

it was supposedly used for a few miles before the motor seized, so i figured it fit on the M2 it came from

Could be for one front exhaust hangar, and you have the 'other' one on the bike...there's the flat metal one, and the updated barbell one. I'm trying to remember if the V&H was different for each front mount design, or if it fit both ways.

Is there a chance that your header has been tweaked? Start from the beginning - loosen EVERYTHING on the exhaust. Head flanges, header mount, all of it. Slide the muffler on the header - loose - and start fiddling. If you can get it lined up, start AT THE HEADS (I always start at the rear head; I don't think it makes a lick of difference but I have yet to break a head stud), and torque your way through the exhaust to the muffler outlet. Go in order. Every time you tighten one point...give the rest of the exhaust a jiggle to get it settled into place.

See if that works.

Also, looking at the pics of the muffler...can you tell if it has hit the ground? Could be the inlet endcap (with the elbow) is tweaked/crooked where it rivets to the main can....

Al at asb has stated before that there were 2 different versions of the 2.5 v&h pipes

I have a carbon fiber vance and hines that I just took off my s1w. I will sell it to you if you want your muffler to fit right. PM me if interested.

As far as front hangers go, this bike came with none. Here is how the current Dynomax is mounted

Joe, i'm with ya on loosening the header to prevent stressing, however i still don't believe thats gonna give me enough play. The muffler and elbow seem in pretty good shape, just a few minor scratches but no tweaks or damage. Same for the header, i don't believe its been tweaked either.

Guell: that would explain it

Italia: PM coming
