My dad picked up a 99 X1. It runs great except when its hot and idling, like at a redlight, it will rev up to 2,000-2,800rpm. if you slip the clutch and lug the motor sometimes it will idle back down. We tried tightening the intake bolts but it didnt help. The bike has a V&H slip on and an American Sport Bike carbon fiber intake assembly. Anyone have any ideas why this things keeps revving up? | ||

Mine used to do that. On mine, the idle speed was set too high. Get it warmed up and adjust it to just under 1000 RPM. Note: If you set it like this, you will have to crack the throttle open a tiny amount when cold starting it until it's a little warmed up. | ||

The intake flange tightens to the head metal to metal compressing the tapered seal, no amount of re-torqueing will cure a leak if the seal is the problem, which would be my first guess to your hot idle problem. New seals are cheap, about $5 a set #26995-86B. | ||

Cool, thanks for the input. We're gonna try the seals. Bike was sitting for 5 years before he bought it. Likely the seals are bad. | ||

It needs a tpms reset! Sitting or not! This will stop the problem......But the seals should be changed every 2 yrs. If the battery was dead the The tpms must be reset. I would try and do a TPM reset first before tearing down the intake seals. It is easier and takes very little time (keep in mind you need a data cable and ECM SPY) to do the TPMS reset ....or you need a HD scanalizer and the knowledge of how to operate it. I have had this problem and every time it was a tpms reset. Or an intake leak like they have posted above. Test the intake seals at operating temps and spray a non combustible aerosol spray and spray around the intake seals where they go into the heads and if the idle changes or gets worse it is a definite intake leak! |
