WTF is this? they killed a poor tuber.

College Pair Build Two-Wheel Clothes Dryer
Is fuel cell experiment really ultra-quiet Top Ramen vacuum?

What could be considered this generation’s Harold and Kumar, a pair of Swarthmore College engineering students have designed and built an experimental hydrogen fuel cell-powered “motorcycle.”

Sourcing parts from what looks to be an early generation Buell Lightning and the unearthed remnants of Robby the Robot, the duo may have just created the World’s quietest and slowest two-wheeled grant-waster.

Constructed with the intent to “evaluate the viability of a hydrogen economy by studying real-world data,” the two-man team says that once the experiment yields the likely results that anyone who uses a hydrogen-powered vehicle is a homo, results predicted by the pair’s Alpha Beta member roommate, they’ll abandon any legitimate research efforts and just use it to follow women that would normally avoid them.

“Since it doesn’t make any noise we’ll get a lot closer to the girls before they have a chance to formulate lame excuses to leave,” said the elder of the two.

Barring the success of that implementation, the machine will be retrofitted with a GPS to help the pair locate lesser-trafficked 7-11s that still display pornography magazines in the standard magazine rack rather than behind the check out counter.

That's a Cyclone, not a Lightning. Or it was.

At least they didn't turn it into a chopper clothes dryer.

Yeah, it could be the leavings of a previous chopper motor-swipe. Might be keeping the frame on the road, while helping the Earth

Re read my post.

70 years ago these were the type of kids that ended up getting us to the moon.

IE the kids that were still on college. The kids still dreaming up jet engines. The kids thinkn what if I take this and add this...

You seen what happens when one company kills ones man imagination. Then what happens when he is set free...

this is the result of the Buell market being killed!
our bikes are used to chop or for stupid experiments like this one!
I dislike...

I'm with Spidey on this one.

I would bet that Erik would think that a hydrogen powered Buell would be cool too!

Eduardo, I am a fan of your bikes, but understand that some purists, now or in the future, would be offended by your modifications too!

Hydrogen is an energy currency, it is not an energy source.

True, and if you drive or ride an electric vehicle with batteries, depending on where you get your electricity from - your "zero" emissions vehicle might be powered by coal.

Neither of these should mean that research into electric or hydrogen powered vehicles should be abandoned - right?

Seeing as how it's held together with duct tape and zip ties, I'd bet the bike could be salvaged.

I'm all for experimenting with new technologies, especially in the energy industry

-BUT -

I'm not sure why they used a Buell frame - not many around and there are much better chassis out there for experiemtation. I mean, first thing that comes to mine is having to work around the fact that the swing arm is bolted to the engine...

yes, my bikes are customized but not used as experiments like this one!
Buells are used to build choppers, mainly for their motors, and the main reason is because the market has been killed for our bikes, especially for Tubers.
in my country, an S1 is still sold for around 10.000 euros, one like mines well over that price. and NOBODY would dare to chop one of those bikes!
that M2 was probably bought for few bucks and that's why it was used for that experiment (a smart experiment, definitely).
Jramsey,
I am free to say whatever I want to say, even if I am living in a glass house. then you're free to reply.
it hurts me to see an old Buell reduced as a skeleton.
I never wanted anybody to like my bikes but me, so I don't see why I can't express my opinion on this brutalization of a Buell?

TIJ, it was meant for Spidey not you, he was commenting on your Ghost rider (nice bike btw)
His M2 is painted up along the lines of of the comic book character "Spiderman".

The meaning of the glass house phrase is don't criticize others without looking in the mirror first.

It's not that you are not free to express your opinion. It is that you made an assumption that they chopped a Buell to make this.

"Bell and Pacheco stripped the guts out of a junked Buell Cyclone"

http://www.wired.com/autopia/2009/03/two-college-s tu/

So they gave a bike new life.

"from a scrap yard for this project."

HOW DARE THEY!!

Jramsey,
I apologize then. I thought it was directed to me. ; )
Spiderman,
even if I made an assumption, why would you bring up my bikes?
why didn't you just let me know that this project started from a junk bike, instead of bringing up my XB?
and now that Jramsey reminded me, your bike also is very debatable, kind of a cheap interpretation of a customization, I must say...
I will make sure to bring up yours more often now, just to give your cheap bike more visibility and make you happy.

Economic & creative self-modification get my attention over something done by a bike shop and a pile of money any day..

But it doesn't typically win bike shows.

Each customized bike has its purpose and it's receptive audience. The hydrogen bike has appeal from an engineering standpoint, Mary Jane is sure to get the attention of tinkering motorcyclists who are into "custom" yet still want a practical bike, and TIJ's creations are sure to catch the eye of judges at a show.

It's a shame that the personalities behind all three masterpieces can't just appreciate each other's passion for all things motorcycle.

I don't care what anyone does to anyones bike. What I do care about is if someone bags on some ones bike.

I don't care what you do with your bike IJ. Just don't bag on kids for creating something new, saving a Buell and creating a project to finish school that is a step in alternative energy.

Man all of youse are touchy. Let's not bring the Quick Board to our play ground

I wanna add this and close this argument.
if you read my first statement closely, I made a comment about why our bikes are used for this kind of experiments (probably these students don't have so many funds, like most of them). the market has been killed and an M2 now can go for $2000 or less. that's why they're cannibalized.
I didn't debate about the project, but seeing the bike brutalized.
that's my personal feeling, can I say that? I assume I can...
and I don't see the reason why one of my bikes should be brought up, to remark some resentment?????
I am not rich, my family is even poorer than me, I arrived here in the US 5 years ago with $700 and a load of dreams. I slept in the street for a week, paid myself a cheap motel for 2 weeks, then I rented an old and dirty apartment and had to sleep and eat on the floor for almost 2 months cause I didn't have the money to buy furniture. the first sofa-bed was given to me from my best friend, bought at a thrift shop.
I started from ground up, everything I've done in my life and with my bikes, came from hard work and LOTS AND LOTS of sacrifices!
and do you think I wanna hear "between the lines" comments from someone who doesn't even know me????
this is what makes me snap, I'm sorry.
I said what I had to say, I apologize to have polluted this thread.
