Are there Two 2 1/2" headers that are over frame rear header? Are they both Race??? Or 65396-YA race and a Lightning 2 1/2" stock not high-performance??Not familiar with Lighting Header.

Not a race header as those ones had collector come all the way down and around. That is off an S-1W and will not work with stock S-2 air cleaner.

Lowers should work just fine.

Only difference between S2 header and S1W header is the collector size, and the fact that the S2 collector pointed to the rear of the bike and the S1W header points across the bike. Primary curves (the S-curve) are the same.

S2, S1W, and early M2/S3 ('97) race headers are the same, and interchangeable. Same primary curves, but they have the 2.5" collector and are pointed at the rear of the bike like the stock 2" S2 header.

For ID purposes, here's a cheat sheet:

2" pointed to the rear is stock S2 (S-bend primaries).

2" pointed across the engine is stock pre-thunderstorm, post-S2 (S-bend primaries; '97 and '98 S3, S1, M2).

2.5" pointed across is stock Thunderstorm (S-bend primaries are '98 S1W; T bend primaries are later bikes - 99-up S3, M2, and X1/S3 with EFI and O2 bung at the rear head).

2.5" pointed to the rear is race. S-bend OR T-bend, no matter. If it's 2.5" and pointed at the back tire...it's a race header.

I have a race header on the way from Erik Buell Racing. It's a late (T-bend under-frame) style for the M2L, but I'll get pictures of it before it's installed on anything.

As Firemanjim pointed out the route of the rear pipe differs between the S2 and S1W headers.
I've bought one of the S1W/S3 headers in the link above but realise that I will have to fit a non-standard air-cleaner to make it work. It gives me the opportunity to use a wider range of exhausts and means that should anything happen to the original header I have options. S2 parts are few and far between over here.

IIRC the headers on the very earliest S1s had a rear pipe that followed a similar route to that on the S2. ie. almost straight down from the rear head rather than kinking forwrds first (and fouling the S2 air-cleaner).

Y'know...now that you mention it, that is absolutely correct. I remember trying to cross up an S1W and S2 header heat shield...and it didn't work, the curve from the rear head, out/back/and down is totally different. I didn't mess with the front because I was just trying to swap heat shields...but it would make sense that the header that fits the "crooked" S2 air cleaner would have to be different.

Next time I break something, I'll try swapping headers from bike to bike ; )

That said...anyone got a race *muffler* around? Got a header on the way from EB-R for the M2L and am on the lookout for a decent condition muffler to go with it....

I thought I had a picture of a very early S1 being tested by Bike Magazine that had the S2 style rear pipe but having checked I was wrong.
I'm sure I have seen a pic of an early S1 with a different header - I can't, for the life of me, think where though.

.........memory not what it used to be !: )

Simon:

It may have been the yellow one on the cover of Cycle World.

That bike was a test mule that had several parts, most notably the side stand attached to the engine case, that were changed prior to production.

All the best to you and Carolyne and if you need parts be sure to let us know so we can help you look.

Butch, is the S1 add the one one that says "The fellows at M.I.T. are scratching there heads about this one" or something to that effect. I have that one hanging in the garage as it was the first time I saw a S1 and owned one 12 months later.

All S2's (and all pre-thunderstorm bikes) had a 2" collector.

2.5" started with the thunderstorm motor in '98.

Cheers Court, hope you guys are well too.

I'm picking up a few parts here and there but it is good to know that help is at hand in the event of the unexpected.

The S3 header brings into play all my old X1 exhausts that have been sitting on a shelf for a few years.

The S1 side stand I was talking about was the yellow one on the cover of Cycle World in July 1995 but that picture shows the "first try" well.

That photo also illustrates something that was amazing about the S1. Check out the frame tube that goes vertically from the horizontal member.

Now look at a photo of a Ducati Monster. Elegant to be sure but count all the straight tubes that need to be beveled and fish-mouthed to fit together.

Now imagine yourself as a manufacturer trying to make something folks can afford AND wanting to design something that eliminates all the joints where things can fail/flex.

Note the way that tube leaves and gracefully curves all the places it needs to go. Not only is it elegant looking but it's elegant design . . it accomplishes what needs to be done, does it better and is amazing engineering.

Elegant world class engineering brought to you from an American dinner table on a farm in Wisconsin.
