I started a rebuild about a year and a half ago on a bike that I really should have walked away from. After not making much progress other than being on a buying spree for the last 8 or 9 months I've finally started putting some labor back into the rebuild. The last couple of weeks have been concentrating on the oil tank and header. I realize that not much of the tank shows but once I started I couldn't find a stopping point. I think I'll stop here with the tank. A few smudges show up in this shot, but from straight on it's a pretty good mirror!
Before:

Old tank

Now:

Shiny!!!

I had the swingarm and kickstand both powder coated, as it turns out slightly different shades of silver. The back wheel and frame are powder coated white.
Some of the stuff that wasn't given as much attention (like the side plates) are starting to look a little ragged next to the shiny stuff.
The weather is perfect this week in Indy. It's a shame that I didn't take off this week. Still it's easier getting motivated to get things done each evening between kid duties.

Things are moving incredibly slow. Got the header shined up. The rear brake line is in place but then I realized that I didn't rebuild the rear master cylinder. Need to buy a kit. Spent a couple days getting the regulator and coil on. Too much time trying to figure out where I lay something down and making multiple trips to the hardware store to get the parts I'm missing.
I do need some info. I bought the ignition switch off the Arizona bike that was parted out about a year ago. The PO had something screwy there so it's a nice replacement. The assembly was off before I had the bike, so I'm not sure what size bolt held that on. The usual parts book reference lists a part but not the description. Can someone send me the bolt head/nut size and approximate length? I know it's not critical but I'd like to be close and would rather not go to the HD (spit) store to get it.

It's either Wheel Silver or Silvadillo. I took the kickstand back later to be matched and it's a slightly different color. I'm guessing the swingarm is Silvadillo with a clear coat over it. I plan on riding over there once it's together and find out for sure. If the difference bothers me too much I've got another kickstand that I'll have coated to match.

So.... I'm guessing that the green wire that's supposed to be part of the VOES goes where I have a hole in the potting. Anyone have an extra VOES?

That's good to hear. There's a couple of things I thought I might go pick up tomorrow so I'll check into it. As far as the other parts I need.... From now on I will bag/tag parts when I remove them. And this time I mean it!!

I dunno how much the rear M/C rebuild kit is, but there's a new S2 M/C on eBay for like $24.

Roger: FWIW, I was able to repair a broken wire on my VOES by digging the potting material out then soldering a new wire on and re-potting with silicone.

Ross,
I saw the ebay listing. Somewhere I've got another 10% coupon that I need to pull out and order that and maybe a couple other items. There's a $10 rebuild kit out there, too.
RT, that's good to know. If I can get a new one for less than $30 I'll probably snag it and work on repairing this one at a later date.

All the shine you are putting on the metal parts will really pay off, setting in there with the beautiful blue and white. This bike will be a winner!

Thanks, guys. That kind of encouragement makes it easier to get back out there!
ZT - It seems like the wheels were about $10 each to sandblast and another $25 each to powdercoat? The cost for rear one is buried in the $320 total I paid for everything that's white plus the swingarm. If I allocate $200 for the frame, $50 for the fairing stay, and $50 for the swingarm, it only takes $20 to strip/paint the wheel so I'm not sure which one is off.
It turned out that the front rim was bent beyond repair (it kept springing back to bent condition) but I scored a clean one on ebay. The white is close enough that the shop talked me out of getting it stripped/coated.

Today was the standard... find out I cut a hose too short, check the other hose and it looks fine, stop a three auto shops before getting new short hose, find out long hose is also too short (barely) get new long hose, three hours later hoses are installed, except that I'm short 1 clamp.
I still need to get the harness installed. Found out my control module was upside down and corrected that. Found out that the new harness will require pulling pins from the controls, so that will have to wait. Still too early to mount body parts but here's another preview:
