Got a few of the Buell letters puffing up like a marshmallow over a campfire. I'm thinking I could slit them very carefully with a razor blade and lay them back down, but I don't know if there is an adhesive that would be appropriate to work on the painted tank. Has anyone ever done this? I don't want to have to strip them off and hunt down another blue decal set if I can prolong this a while.

Try to get a hypodermic syringe w/needle. Perforate the bubble w/the needle, suck out the air therein & press down firmly. If this doesn't work inject a very small amount of adhesive thru the hypodermic needle into the bubbled area & press down firmly. I haven't used this method on Buell stickers but it has worked on other bubbled coverings. I've no idea what type of adhesive would be best.

The paint itself won't be far behind.

Thanks, Chris. I'll try that. Joe, the tank was already painted, but you never know. If it does happen, then at least I can correct what I think is a bit too dark a paint job (the tank color looks a tiny shade "greener" than the other IWP bits).

I had the letters bubble for a few months and as it sat over the winter the whole tank went. It is now a wrinkly bubbled mess over about 2/3 of the tank... I think once it starts you might as well plan on repainting the whole thing! Research the correct method here and make sure your painter follows it.

+1,000.

It's all in the prep.

I currently have a "recall" tank on my S1W - a factory tank with the late-model raised logos. It's also a little "bluer" than the rest of the bike; my tail, fender, and flyscreen all look a little whiter/yellower. Not sure if it was a black prime/prep coat on the tank and lighter prep on the others or what...

And my recall tank is ...interesting. It's not bubbling. At all. But, it is getting a neat crackle-glaze to the finish, like the under-layer is shrinking and cracking, but the top colorcoat is staying right where it belongs. Don't really notice it till you're close enough to throw a leg over, and I'm not gonna sweat it...but it's an odd one for sure.

Worst case, I still have the Leper-Tank and a friend who can prep it properly : ) Just wish I could find OEM decals...I do love the under-the-clearcoat logos!

Does the bubbling appear to happen on some colors more then others? My 97 S1 only has 2 letters bubbling only very slightly, I mean hardly noticable, I am knocking on wood as I type this also. The letters have been like this for years and have not changed, it is a black tank.

Blks1, my s1w had bubbled decals and some small tank bubbles here and there when I got it. They've all gotten worse.

Rat, that Lepar-tank is hideous. So, those decals are no longer available? I'd really like to resolve these bubbles and restore it to stock condition.

For those facing a tank re-paint, wouldn't it just be better to have the logo painted on, especially if the decals are not available?

I have also seen someone cut the letters off with a razor blade, and stick the newer style letters on, it looked good.
My letters haven't gotten any worse in about 5 years or so, whenever it just slightly bubbled.

Rat: My 00 M2 also is starting to develop this under the clear, shrinking/cracking symptom! Like you mentioned from even a few feet away it's not noticable but if you look at it in the right light, up close, you can see the deteriation of the paint! Almost looks like a shattered windshield but hard to see! (If that makes any sense?)

Can someone point to the correct procedure? I know where to find what products to use, but there isn't a procedure listed that I can find...

Court - just trying to find stock tank decals, 98 S1W, OEM tank pictured above (with leprosy). Ice White Pearl paint, decals are a dark royal blue BUELL and a navy blue (damn near black) AMERICAN MOTORCYCLES.

Good to see you on the boards more and more here the last couple days...maybe I'll give you a ring this weekend, check in and see how things are going ; )

Let me check . . . I've got an entire file box somewhere of old decals . . some for bikes that made production and some that were close.

I'm in the serious basement purge mode at present . . . let me see what I can find.

OOooohhh...SO tempting to show up in NYC with a pitchfork, a snowshovel, and my 8' Dodge Ram pickup!

What's your schedule on Sunday? I have to renew my (so far un-revoked) drivers license on Saturday... : )

If you can find some, I'll put a check in the mail in a heartbeat. And, if you have any for a Red Snap (or was it Snap Red...I can never remember) S2 (white BUELL, gray AMERICAN MOTORCYCLES), or any nose/tail decals for either bike...let me know. Never hurts to have spare bodywork stuff, especially the way *I* ride LOL.

"close" to production? hmmm....hell, even a photo of those would be cool. Maybe a chapter for the next book - Decals From The Edge (of production)?

And if you find Marchesini wheel decals (clear with blue text, that go on the S2 wheels)? I'll give ya a kidney.

Seriously.

Oh, and...

THANK YOU!!! Let me know if you come up with anything!

Joe,
I believe I can still get a stencil of what was made for my S2 for minimal $$. You'd have to chase down the paint colors if you went that route. Not the original decals, but it does have advantages when it comes time to wash and wax. Lemme know.

Hahahaha . . . .Joe. . . My wife was having a piano delivered this morning and while making room for it in the basment was helping me look and she opened a cardboard box and out fell about 200 decals and and old shirts from dealer shows. . . . .it's REALLY time to start cleaning out.

I'l try to dig through and see if I have the ones you need. I think I have your address, but you might shoot me a PM just to make certain.

I'm betting the "Hoarders" folks show up here soon! . . this is sickness . . . over 22 years worth of accumulated stuff.

P.S. - The original sheet music to DUST IN THE WIND signed by Kerry Livgren stays. : )

Court, and I am guessing here, it seems that you have a problem.. Admitting you have a problem is the first step...

Funny, Lynn has been watching some show about Hoarding... It is like watching a train wreck... I have a feeling that if Vicki ever sees that show you will be in for some therapy soon after.

I cannot wait to show Lynn your picture..
