Couldn't seem to find this topic in the archives... It seems like something people would do.

I was wondering about sanding the metal (aluminum?) of my X1's tail section to get out some scratches and maybe polish it so a shine. It feels like it has some sort of clear coating on it though, so I don't know if this is a good idea. I have no way to replace the clear coat once its sanded off.

Now, I do enjoy cleaning the motorcycle (this is the first thing I've owned that's nice enough to BE cleaned) so if its more prone to dirtiness, that's fine. I worry more about corrosion resistance than anything.

Would 1000 grit wet sanding do the job you think?

There is a powdercoat clearcoat covering the tail section (and the swingarm, engine covers, etc...). You'd have to remove that to get to the aluminum (unless you sand right through it I guess but then you'll have to remove it all over).
I powdercoated my tail section flat black but in order to first remove the clear, I used some Permatex Gasket Remover and brushed it clean with a stainless steel brush. It is a lot of work but it can be done.

wow another good thread I have a tail section that looks pretty ratty and was contacted by another bad webber that said they are painted, so they are actually clear coated with a powder coat underneath? I was wondering if I could repolish mine. But I'm buying another one. More good information!

Judging from my progress, you can get back to the original finish with some good polishing techniques and some aerosol clear coat. So far so good.

@Babired, it is more of a clear powdercoat that is applied to the aluminum, I assume it is to prevent oxidation.
Very tough stuff to remove, especially in the corners.
Here is a pic of the stripped parts, ready for the powdercoating oven.

It almost looks like the regular X1 tail section. I'm buying a tail section a Bueller never used. So it's in perfect condition. I might get the ratty one re-done or sell it sometime next year. Thank you for the information! K

X1_rider, what is that piece hanging in the middle? You said engine cover but somehow I am drawing blank on what piece that is.

Looks like the primary cover. The inside (facing the camera) is masked so it doesn't get powder coated.

That's right, it's the primary cover.
Here are the pieces out of the oven.
