I have a full D&D system and usually use the SE exhaust gaskets....How long should they last?? I seem to be going through them every 1500-2000 miles. I have also noticed that i blow them usually when down shifting from 5th to 4th and bringing the rpms to red line and then back to 5th gear again.

Is there any other gaskets that will not burn up. Or at least last longer.

I also made sure that i did not over tighten them and smash them.

+1. Sounds like they aren't seating flush, or you have a burr, or the pipe doesn't fit right and you're burning through them.

If I remember correctly, they simply do NOT like to slide over the exhaust pipes they fit so tight. If yours are dropping onto the exhaust with no trouble...there's your problem. They also don't really like to fit into the heads. They fit TIGHT all around...but I doubt that's your problem unless you have some damage to your exhaust ports.

What sequence are you using to torque everything down? The way I've found best on my S1W - can't remember if it's the "right" way - is to snug everything but leave some play (header, muffler, and muffler hangars). Torque the rear head port down first, grabbing and jiggling the header as you go. Once it's snug, jiggle and tighten to spec the front port. Then - same deal - the bottom header hangar. Then the muffler-to-header clamp. Then the front muffler hangar, followed by the rear. It's like cross-torquing car wheel lugnuts - it spreads the loads the right way and keeps the header from being "bunched" against one head or the other.

It seems these Xl\xb heads have a lip that is smaller than the first outter one....I wonder if i had not been putting then into the smaller lip deep enough and or it was catching the step and damaging\kinking the gasket. This time i used a little 90 degree pick and used the curved side to massage them into place. It looked better when i got it down in the smaller part of the port.

Thanks for the e-mail...I will look into it.
