... for rabbit!  I took the day off and went riding in the mountains with a friend Monday. On our way home, a rabbit jumped out in front of me. I felt it hit my knee and thought it must've bounced off, but I didn't see a furry corpse in my rearview. Surely it couldn't be ... oh, man. I craned my head down and sure enough there was a leg sticking out under the air cleaner.   We pulled over and held a brief funeral, which mostly consisted of scraping burned rabbit off my headers. Yuck. Oh well, at least it wasn't a deer. | ||

Most rabbits in the warmer seasons have warbles. They start coming through the skin/fur about 1/2-1 hour after the host is deceased. Years ago I shot a cottontail late summer and within 20 minutes I could see lumps moving under the skin. | ||

I have heard that warbles don't contaminate the meat, but I don't want to experiment with my own food. I'll wait till first snow. Fresher roadkill? Riding home would've left that hossenpfeffer roasted to a juicy perfection! | ||

Similar to the warble is the bot fly. Check Youtube for it, it sometimes lays it's eggs in humans. Nasty stuff. | ||
