I am a new member to the forum but have been reading for info for the past couple of years. I have just replaced wheels and tires on my 2002 X1 with my black spare set that I bought new from a dealer. I have never taken the front wheel off so this was the first time. I was paying more attention to the brake rotor and caliper coming off than the axle and spacers. My question is, are the spacers between the wheel and forks are supposed to touch the forks on both sides? While tightening the axle nut, it seemed like I had a long way to tighten to make the forks touch the spacer on the rotor side of the wheel. I have about a 1/2 inch or better gap between the fork and spacer on the rotor side. Thanks for the help, I figure I would ask and be safe rather than sorry.

The axle has a shoulder on the rotor side that goes against the spacer.

Just tighten the axle/nut to approx 50 ft.lbs, then work the forks up and down a few times while holding the front brake then tighten the 4 pinch bolts on the lower legs to 12-15 ft. lbs.

BTW welcome to the forum.
