Hello, I discovered that my ignition switch on the s1w is loose in the bracket. The face nut seems to be tight, but the ignition switch itself juggles slightly, and moves within the bracket while riding. The manual is silent as to how tight the face nut should be. Here are my questions: Is the ignition switch supposed to be a little loose in the bracket? If not, what is the best tightening procedure and what size socket or wrench should be used? I was thinking channel locks with something to absorb the teeth but wanted to see what other badwebbers suggest. Thanks in advance! | ||

I hate to tell ya this but you might have a problem. When the ignition switch ring vibrated loose the ignition itself was left to bounce around in the bracket hole. The bracket is steel, the ignition housing is pot metal or aluminum. Guess which one loses. The threads on the ignition switch are buggered and need to be cleaned up. I just had the same issue with my son's S2. I used a a thread file to clean up the switch housing. I had to use a new ring as the threads were messed up in the old one from trying to tighten it on the buggered threads. You may luck out and the threads in the ring are OK. Brad | ||

No problem loosening it, tightening it was the problem. I taped up the jaws of a channel lock pliers to remove one that wasn't messed up on my M2. I initially used a punch on the groves on the side of the ring. If you are careful, you don't mess it up. I also used the punch method to do the final tightening on both of them. | ||

Thanks bluzm2. I cleaned up the threads, snugged the nut with rubber jawed pliers, and used lock-tite. So far so good. Thanks! | ||

just fyi - I replaced my S1 ignition key and lock with a stock sportster setup - much nicer than the beater I had. Should also be able to get keys later...also American Sportbike has a replacement system |
