Hi all. I have recently inherited a twice wrecked S1W. Mostly superficial damage and the motor has been hopped up a bit. But this seemed like the place to share the story. As i'm not made of money my first real goal is to make it presentable and get it back on the road. I'll worry about making it nice later. Wow. Nice save.
Some initial thoughts: you can weld on a frame brace tube. See your photo 29; going from lower left where the frame drops down (by the oil filter in the photo), go up and right, to where the tubes come together (in front of your rear cylinder in the photo). The X1 frames have this piece, and since you are working on the frame and painting, you could easily do this small mod.

Did you remove all the black paint from the heads and cylinders? S1W's have Thunderstorm heads, painted black from the factory, that set these apart from non-T'storms. It looks like a PO painted the cylinders to match the heads.

Were/are the headers pretty scraped up? Wrap is a good option if so - definitely gives the bike a "look," especially when combined with the forcewinder intake.

That pink bike with white tires and training wheels in pic 35 is AWESOME!!! :-)

Very nice, glad to see one getting *saved* for a change, instead of getting chopped!

I'm still learning about the history of this bike. the headers were already wrapped when i got it. I know it was wrecked once before and brought back. the previous owner had a lot of work done to motor. then he got forced into a barricade. do to other obligations he couldn't afford to fix the bike so it fell into my hands. After looking around on this site i like the idea of the frame brace. I will add that to my growing to do list. My daughter loves the pink bike I'm trying to convince here to ditch the training wheels though....lol
Thanks for the input so far keep it coming please, I'm sure you all know more than me on this project and i'll happily let you point me in the right direction.

Can I ask how you repaired the cracked plastic bodywork?

F_skinner, I taped up and clamped the outside of the panel to hold the shape. I then prepped and fiberglassed the underside. after that i used a minimal amount of bondo to fill the hairline crack left on the outside and even out any other defect. a little primer and color and now you can't tell without removing the panel from the bike. total cost of the repair was $20 plus time. I hope that answers your question.
