Well, after periodically checking the local Craigslist for the better part of a year for a stablemate for the Uly I finally decided to take the plunge. Since I already have an XB platform I was thinking either Old School or 1125. I came across what I consider a pretty nice deal locally and decided to go all in - I was sold after taking it for a spin .

It's a 98 S1 with only 5700 miles. The mods include a corbin seat, V&H exhaust, CF parts, jetted carb, and the bike is lowered.

I will have to undo the lowering at some point. The girl I bought the bike from gave me the name and number of the guy who did the lowering and after talking to him it sounds like he only lowered the rear end by fabricating a new bracket for the rear shock. He said he doesn't remember taking the forks apart and the triple trees aren't moved, so I'm thinking I just need a new mounting bracket - which I don't recall seeing the parts she gave me but maybe I overlooked it.

So other than that the only imperfections I could find so far are a bubbly sicker on the gas tank (which i see is common) and a bent handlebar. I cannot see any scuffs on the bike so I am not sure how the handlebar was bent - maybe from a poor job trailering the bike?

Doesn't look lowered to me. But if you look at front shock mount you should be able to tell. There is a shock mount on E-Bay right now.

The last shock mount I saw on ebay was listed incorrectly. Measure your shock from eye to eye. I'll shoot a pic of the two types of mounts in the next day or so.

Easy Rider - the shock from eye to eye is approximately 16.5"

After taking a closer look it appears to me that some metal was welded onto the front mount to move the front mount hole back about 1". I'm thinking I could just cut off the added metal to return the shock to the stock position.

That's how I found my S1W back in '06. Stumbled on it, all 1,100 miles of it, about half an hour from home.

"Scary-loose" is the key to belt adjustment.

Primary adjustment is similar to your XB.

Engine is dirt-simple. If your rockerboxes leak, the updated HD kit works just fine. You can always upgrade to XB rockerboxes and eliminate a layer of gaskets if you want. If your pushrod bases leak...pony up and get the NRHS billet bases - DAMHIK, but if you don't you will curse that bike every season when it starts leaking - again - until you finally choke and buy the billet.

And slide your bellows boot down over the clutch cable adjuster : )

Thanks for the info. I have a few items on my list now and fortunately none will keep me from riding it - no oil leaks or funny noises.

I rode it in to work today and it is definitely a treat to ride. A Mr Hyde to the Dr Jekyll Uly. I'm not a fan of loud bikes but I'm kind of digging the sound for now, I think I may keep it that way.

You can 'tune' the exhaust sound a little bit by pulling the rear cap off the muffler, removing the endcap and core, and packing it with more or less material. Some folks use wood stove door-gasket rope; I'm partial to stainless steel wool; others like plain ol' fiberglass mat. Whichever way you go...more stuff = less noise, less stuff = more volume.

You are absolutely right, I've modified a couple of those shock mounts to lower bikes for women with short legs.
Looking at your pic above of your shock mount, it would be a breeze to return it back to normal.
Or, perhaps someone here on the badweb that is vertically challenged would be interested in trading with you.
I've seen questions pop up about three times a year regarding lowering a tuber...

id reccomend not cutting it, but possibly getting another used one, that way you can hang on to it in case someone needed a lower mount. would be nice to just pick one up from someone they arent using?

Thanks for the info and good words everyone.

I already picked up a new sidestand from my local dealer. They actually had one in stock for something like $28. Even they were shocked they had one. It looks like there is a shock mount on ebay that might work, I may try to get that and sell the old modified shock mount and shortened sidestand for someone who wants to lower their bike.

I'm also picking up a new handlebar from the dealer tomorrow. When I stopped by the dealer yesterday to get the sidestand, they found a handlebar at another dealer which arrived today. I'm having way better luck getting things for the S1 than I ever have for the Uly.

Took the bike on about a 70 mile round trip for work today - mix of interstate and country roads and I'm really digging this bike. The ride, the handling, the sound, everything. So much different than the Uly - which is what I wanted, why have two bikes that are almost the same?

Ultimately I am sure the Uly will take its place back for the longer trips once the novelty of the S1 wears off - hopefully that takes a while.

That is really nice . I wish mine had the blue frame . I am curious how much that cost . If you dont mind me asking . It looks like aftermarket brake pedal too.

I paid $3700 for it. I really only wanted to spend $3000. Not saying I don't think the bike is worth what I paid, because obviously I do or I wouldn't have bought it. It's just that I was in the market for a $3000 bike. The low miles, condition of the bike, and the test ride sealed the deal.

The bike came with a service manual, parts book, 2001 Buell accessories catalog, stock exhaust, bell saddle bags (for an M2), tank bra, and two stock air intakes.

The bike has a few of the Buell accessories such as the footpegs, shifter and brake pegs, and CF bits.

I was in the same situation this spring . I wanted a bike . I wanted it to be diffrent . It was advertised for 3000 grand then he went up to 3500. I wanted to spend 2500. I was only going to take 2500 with me . I ended up paying 2600. I think maybe 2700. Yours really is a great bike though .

Geeze you blokes get it good in the US, if I could get Buells as cheap as you I'd have a shed full.
S1's are advertised in OZ from 10 grand up
theres an S1 W for $12,490 and an S1WL on Ebay that he wants 16 G's for with bubbled paint.
I'd fall over myself to buy that for 2,700
which is just under 3 grand AU

Yip Mick, the prices are good for a buyer over there(not the seller),i'd have a shed full too.

Have you checked the prices out for Buells
on NZ's Trade Me?.
Two S1's, one for $6.5K and one For $8K...
They are a sh#t load cheaper than in OZ.

Some prices are not to far behind US,others miles away.

Yeah mate, look there often, there was an S2
for sale a while back I would have bought, if I could have imported it, but post 89 bikes are damn near impossible to get in unless
they were previously imported by the manufacturer and ADR compliant.

They never imported S2's , thats the problem.
You can bring them in if you can prove you lived in the US for twelve months,and owned the bike for the duration, otherwise it has to be checked and certified ADR compliant
by a RAWS workshop ,which means lots of money.

Even early S1's had Lighting heads. Pretty sure stock sportster heads were only used on the S2's.
