Hey there people, i'm having trouble with an intermittent starting problem. 1:Initially it appeared as a firing on rear pot only problem,a couple of days later i cleaned the plug and checked for spark, Spark was good, bike fired up. 2:The next time it was no spark on either and battery ran down to barely turning over, i assumed battery old and beyond hope (had been on recharge a couple of time and it was looking very tired/damaged when i bought the bike)So i replaced the battery a couple of days later...after a bit of a splutter the bike fired right up again. 3: I was riding yesterday, enjoying the weather and it had a little splutter while doing 62 or so mph in top gear...with a little twist of the throttle it cleared up, dropped back to 4 gear, this happened several times....no probs for a bit...no idea what that was, fuel or the mysterious spark issue. 4:Today i go to fire up my bike..and what do you know...back to the old no spark problem... just wondering if running rich can cause firing problems? and i would like to follow the no spark test from plugs back to source...but i get stuck at changing the coil for a known working item to ascertain weather the coil is the problem due to there not being one available, so ,is there a way to check the coil is working with out swapping the coil with a working one? alternatively has anyone had a similar issues...thanks....Macca (Message edited by LOST95 on July 16, 2010) |

The procedure for testing the coil is in the service manual. Of course that is not much of a help if you don't have one. You could use the service manual posted here on line. It is not for your bike but I suspect the coil test should be close. You may also have faulty plug wire(s). That is more likely than a bad coil. |

Thanks mate, i have a manual saved to the computer. The problem with the testing procedure is only that i don't have a coil....However yesterday both plugs where very black so i cleaned them and gave them a bit of a light scuff....walah it fired up... i'm guessing i need hotter plugs. I gave it a birthday a couple of months ago and have had this problem since, the only thing that wasn't a cosmetic dress up was new plugs and a hypercharger. HD plugs are 10r12a so i'm off to buy some 10r12x plugs and see how they go. It already had a factory race ECM and Factory Pipe... anyway...thanks for your help, i'm going to change the Leads for good measure aswell... Macca |

Good to hear. NGK DPR9EA-9 (#5329) is also a good substitute. |
