wood

replace the o2 first
or find the problem
(loose wire)
changing the maps with a malfunctioning system just makes it worse.

The map in the 99 ECM was lean even in stock trim. If you've got a pipe on it and a higher flowing filter, you need to update your maps. Start with the "stock" race ECM maps. Your problems will probably go away.

I realize that conflicts with oldog's advice, but your O2 sensor error may be the result a lean condition, not the cause of it.

And check for intake seals leaking and make sure the vacuum port on bottom of manifold is still plugged.

Assuming no leaks, I'm with Hootowl on this one since I ran into the same exact problem when I switched to V&H and FW.
Let me know if you need the Race maps.
If you still get the code, then replace the sensor.

+1 on FMJ's intake leaks should be checked,

I'm not saying you don't have a bad O2 sensor, but I am saying that you need to change your maps, because even if you change your sensor and the code goes away, you'll still be running too lean. The feedback from the sensor is only used during closed loop operation, which on an X1 is a fairly narrow set of operating conditions. So since you have to update the maps anyway, why not start there? You MIGHT not have a bad sensor.

First thing I suggest is clear all the codes. Now, if the light comes on (to register the O2 related code) right when you start off, then I would be leaning towards a bad O2 sensor. Of course the bike needs to get up to a certain temperature (IIRC 600F) before the O2 starts doing its thing and for the light to come on. So I assume you let the bike warm up and then take off. Either way, you need to get Race maps and the O2 sensor is only $20. So not much to worry about. The seals are always a weak spot.

Have you reset your AFVs to 100?

Don't mess with the EEPROM. You just need to load the Race fuel/timing maps. They will give you a starting point and you can then fine tune the maps to match your specific set up. In the meantime, read the ECMSPY Tuning Guide to get familiar with the procedures. I could send you the Race maps.

That is a bit much on the high side. Reset the AFV once you have the Race maps burned and see if it stays in the 95-105 range. I think it will with the Race maps. TPS reset is not required but recommended.
