My 1998 S-1W came with a modded front shock mount meant to lower the bike. I have since ditched it and replaced it with this shock mount that the guy sent me. He says it's the stock S-1W mount but I'm not sure because the back of my bike seems to sit kinda of low. What do you think? Any expert here, can you look at it and tell me what eye to eye shock length should be fit to make my White Lightning ride at proper height?  I'm not even sure this is the correct shock so that's why I'm hoping I can get some ideas on measurements. So I can measure this shock, the other one he gave me as well as my AST. Here is a pic of the bike with the lowered mount and the other shock that WAS on the bike.   | ||

dude, First,your shock is mounted BACKWARDS!!!!!! second, you have what is referred to often as the 16.5" shock, or the clam shell "fix" that buell came out with in 2000. They later recalled that fix and had dealers install a 14.75" (bolt eye to bolt eye) shock, with a remote reservior that allowed finer tuning. That shock kit included a new shock and mounting hardware, including a proper shock mount, to allow for the shorter shock. If your bike looks like it is sitting low, it is b/c it is sitting low. you need to remove the front mounts (why is are there two mounting points??)m turn the shock around, and install a 14.75 inch shock with the rear most mount OR install the shock that you have connected to the foreward most mounting point. I recently replaced my shock and have a 14.75" shock and all mounting hardware if you're interested. the shock is a "leaker" and needs a rebuild (race tech I understand can do the job for you), but the mounting hardware is mostly brand new and the correct front shock mount is brand new, I can sell it to you if interested. | ||

I have a 14+" remote res shock in Salt Lake that you can have if you want it. It's used but not leaking, just laying on the garage floor. | ||

I'd still use the AST that also came with your bike from the PO if I were you. One of the best out there, and with the awesome coil spring look to it as well! | ||

Again Bueller, if you READ my post it says that the one with the backwards shock is the modded to lower the bike shock mount. And yes it looks low because IT IS low. I'm asking about the shock mount in the above pics. | ||

Yes, use the short mount, currently on your bike with a 14" shock, or the forward mount with the shock (16") currently mounted backwards on your bike (not sure that the direction matters as there is clearance for it either way, and either way it's still a pull type shock). Not that I'm an expert by any means... I am running the short shock on my M2 and hope to put it back together in a day or two; perhaps I should ride out and you can compare my shock mount and shock to what you have and see how you want to set yours up. | ||

Little the direction may not matter from a mechanical point of view, but it would from a function value, rebound valving is different from compression valving. | ||

Littlebuggles: Yeah it would be good to meet another Buell owner here in Utah. I can ride out to SLC as well, if you got a day and time to meet up? Send me a note or PM. Again to be clear the shock where the bike is lowered (IE, the shock is mounted backwards) is NOT the current state of my bike. That is how it arrived. I since changed to a different shock (I didn't measure before I mounted it because I thought it was the shock mount that was the lowering means) and a different front shock mount-see the very 1st picture. Thanks Littlebuggles for letting me look at your bike and it's mount. I ended up finding that the shock that was on my bike (without the remote resevoir), the white springed AST(??) and another Showa with remote resevoir in my junk box were all 16.5 inches long. So it appears as though my ride height is/was correct with the non-modded front shock mount. |
