It was about a year ago that I fell for a 98 S3T with 56,000 miles. I found it on Craigslist and it was one of those-“I always wanted to ride one of those” test rides. I took it out for a 10 mile ride then bought it on the spot. I was very nervous about how the reliability would be for a Buell with this many miles. 1 year later I am closing in on 60,000 miles, good time to give a report to anyone who is interested.

It has needed some TLC, but a lot less than I thought it would. It needed a clutch right away, I knew that going in, the clutch was the original and was starting to slip in 4th and 5th. I found it easy and fun to do wheelies, I did a lot of those and the belt broke last fall while doing a wheelie. It had over 45,000 miles on it so I wasn’t too upset. Over the winter the front fork seals started weeping oil, maybe related to the wheelies? I don’t do those anymore. I need a rear shock, its leaking fluid and bouncing like a pogo.

Everything else has been reliable; the motor runs great, is strong and has not given me any issues. Handling is awesome. This is the most fun, character filled bike I have owned (been riding since 1970). Its one of the most comfortable bikes I have been on for long distance riding, the only reason I would consider selling it is if I was to buy a newer Ulysses. Hopefully I can keep riding this bike all the way to 100,000 miles. So far so good....

well I can say if you get a Uly you will be in BIG TROUBLE! Totally hooked to the Buell brand
I have an X1 too and I love both bikes.

I have a 99 S3. My only beef is that the fairing doesn't offer much wind protection. I put on a bigger windshield, but it didn't help much. I love that Vtwin torque, and the handling and front brake are great.
