Do the X1's have a temperature sensor that would kill the bike if it got too hot? I was riding in stop and go traffic yesterday (95 and humid) and my X1 died at a stop light. I could tell that it was running much hotter than normal, but i've never had it stop running on me. I finally got it started back up and it felt like it was running on only one cylinder, sputtering under throttle, no power etc. I had 100 miles on the particular tank of gas and probably a gallon left in the tank. I stopped and filled it up anyway and didn't have any problems the rest of the way home, which was at cruising speeds and not stopped traffic.

RE: Temp' sensor: Not as far as I know. It could Possibly have been a "vapor lock" somewhere between the tank, fuel pump, fuel filter and the injectors. I would pull the plugs and check their condition just to be sure adequate fuel is reaching both cylinders. My X1 runs a little "rough" in stop-go traffic when it's warm out (I'm in Florida)
Good luck!

Yes they do have a cylinder head temperature sensor and it will kill one cylinder if it overheats.

I had a similar instance on my M2L. Stuck in traffic in a Strip Mall for about 25 minutes, mostly stopped. 95+ Deg's. Fortunately I was about 1/2 block from the Harley dealer when it finally quit running. They were having some kind of "To-Do". So I pushed her over, hung out for 20 minutes, and let the bike cool off. She fired right up, and away we went. I assumed there was a "Melt-Down" circuit of some sort at that point...

I'm not sure it will actually kill one cylinder but it does go into a "limp" mode by skipping spark on one or both cylinders. You're better off turn the engine off in extended stan still traffic.

I don't know that it necessarily killed the cylinder but it was running like you say, it was almost like it wasn't getting enough spark. I rode it home the rest of the way without traffic at about 60mph and it was fine. I've rode in heat like that before but never had any problems, I was riding 2-up though, which may have been the difference.

I have had the same problem with my X1 but it never quit on me in traffic. In hot weather with low gas for some reason it will run rough faster than if I had a full tank. Never figured that one out. I run traditional oil in my X1 so if the FI light comes on in the dash because of hot weather I'm usually in the city traffic or a back up I will shut down the bike and let it cool down for a while and then when I get a chance change the oil. I added the aftermarket fan made by Buell on the X1 it has a thermostat and it will come on when it gets hot and after I rode it for a while. I don't know if this part is still being made. The fan helps a lot! I need a battery for it now the gel that was in it lasted for 7 years!

If you're in that kind of traffic a lot, I suggest you install the fan for the X1/S3. It was designed to cool the intake on Japanese models because of the low grade gasoline available there, but the air blowing in between the heads carries a good deal of heat away with it, and not just from the intake. It helped on mine. FYI, the fan is the same for both models, but the mounting plate for the S3 has a Pegasus on it, since it is visible when mounted.

Do you have any parts left from that crashed Millennium? Mine is now a burnt orange color with carbon fiber plastics, but I'm always looking to collect parts for it.

nope sorry, some of the parts I could get off of it before it went to scrap I put on the Racing stripe X1 . you gonna save the silver plastics. I know the Millennium was rarer than the racing stripe since they had another racing stripe in 1999. I have the jet coated headers on my racing stripe the coating started to crack up after the 30,000 mile mark in one spot which sucked.

oh yeah don't know how true it is I know some of the metric water cooled bikes run about 186 temp and the old tubers when the light comes on is about 300 if Court or another rider of Buells for many years is lurking it would be great to see if this is really true or not. I learned this from a Buell tech before the XB's came to the market

I do have the original millennium plastics and don't plan to get rid of them. They're in excellent condition, with the exception being where the normal wear spot from the clutch cable is.

I'd keep them I remember in 2003 some of the guys would buy the 2003 HD bikes and crate the 2003 tanks fenders and stuff then replace with readily available part
I always thought about getting another Millennium just to have it again. Do you have the key fob that came with it?

The Synthetic oil made a difference in my bike. also I run the Dynaglide oil filter since it has a larger capacity. Anything to help it stay cool. However in traffic, it is worth it to just shut it down sometimes.

I also run full synthetic, don't they make a re-usable oil filter that also acts as an oil cooler, it has fins in it? Or am I way off base with that thought?

I don't have the original key fob, all of the parts that've i've taken off i still have. Everything is powder coated a different color though, either burnt orange or black.

Koz interesting on the Dyna glide oil filter I'll have to check that out next time I change the oil in her.
I've heard about the re-usable oil filter but never seen them
You got to get the fan it works good!

Yeah, alot of guys run the Dynaglide filter. It is easier to remove and doesn't look to weird on the bike. It gets you maybe a 1/3 to 1/2 of an extra quart of oil in the bike. Not much, but every little bit helps.

Of course the guy at the parts counter will look at you weird when you ask for it, so what....
