Hello all,
I have bought my bike new in 2001, it was a 2 year left over. Recently in the last 2 years I notice the engine giving off lots more heat than it used to. I have just over 70K miles on it. Original fuel pump and injectors. I did a top end on it last year thinking that would help....nope it did not. I live in an area where we have re-formulated gas, I did try 1.5 tanks of the non-reformulated gas and no difference. The bike idles fine and accelerates fine. No engine light has come on, my fan does turn on when I'm stuck in traffic, and I never have noticed it go into limp mode where it runs on one cylinder. I'm wondering if my fuel injectors are a little plugged or varnished over resulting in a lean condition and producing more engine heat. Also I noticed my fuel mileage has dropped to 45. Not sure how that figures into a lean condition if at all. Anyone have ideas what to test for or try? My butt and inside right thigh are my temp sensors telling me this is not normal.

check the plugs for color and ash
what are they telling you?

what feels hot is some what subjective

70k miles the fuel system may be a bit dirty, but my bike has only 46k and that means that you ride alot to me that seems that the system should be cleaner.

Is your engine light on?
Any codes?

Did you replace the head temp sensor when you did the top end, how about the O2 sensor?
(some times these can go bad by just a bit but not throw a code. I have seen 02 and Head temp sensors give off .4 volts instead of the .5 causing an issue but not pulling a code)

Test the intake seals?

But pull the plugs first, JIC your but temp sensor needs re-calibratin.

TPS re-set with an AFV re-set may help as well...

Perhaps the cam position sensor shifted a little?
It might be worth going in there to see if the timing plate is lose or something.

I bring this up since my X1 was timed wrong in Oklahoma City H-D and my fuel economy went down to 40 too.

Perhaps the high temp is a symptom of running less efficiently.
Remember that the squirt has to be timed just right so that the intake valve is ready for it.

Thanks for the replies.
1 plugs are tan (normal combustion)
2 O2 sensor was changed 20K miles ago
3 original temp sensor
4 intake seals seem good, no RPM changes when intake sprayed with carb cleaner
5 no engine light, therefore no codes
6 not sure about cam position sensor, have to check that.

I do have new injectors on order, they should be here tomorrow.

Thanks again.

New injectors and plugs installed no change in heat the engine creates.
Took out the oil pump to check the gerotor clearance thinking the oil pump is shot, it checks well within spec.
Found my old temp readings and added some new ones. Using one of those laser temp guns I measured the following.
date - front plug - rear plug - oil dip stick - outside temp.
Fall 08 ---- 261 ----- 294 ------ 150 --- 74
Fall 08 ---- 270 ----- 310 ------ 128 --- 74
Fall 08 ---- 273 ----- 316 ------ 140 --- n/a
June 09 --- 246 ----- 298 ------ 122 --- 53
June 09 --- 210 ----- 323 ------ 152 --- 60
June 09 --- 259 ----- 308 ------ 115 --- 77
June 09 --- 260 ----- 315 ------ 160 --- 86
June 09 --- 251 ----- 300 ------ 106 --- 109
July 10 ---- 299 ----- 365 ------ 191 --- 95
July 10 ---- 309 ----- 368 ------ 164 --- 89
Aug. 10 ---- 292 ----- 347 ------ n/a --- 112
Hope someone can do some temp readings on their bike for comparision. 360 degrees too me seems high on the rear spark plug. I have a 40 mile drive to work and these readings are taken when I get home from work within 2 minutes of getting off the bike.

I'm thinking of changing out the o2 sensor next. I don't have a laptop or any software like "ECMSPY" to check or monitor my electronics. I would appreciate if anyone near me (Racine Wisconsin) would help me check I'm doing the right thing.
