Just came home for lunch and in front of the pawn shop down the street was a purple S2 (I believe). I'd be happy to stop and check it out if anyone thinks they might be interested in one. It looks awful lonely chained to the post. I'm going to work real hard on the wife tonight to let me bring it home. |

The easiest way to tell is to look for the two screws between the tank cover and tail section...

Which is which? It has hard bags but that is really all I could tell from the street. It's only a couple of blocks from the house so I'm planning on stopping by after work. |

I think the easiest way to tell is an S3 has S3 bodywork and an S2 has S2 bodywork, lol. I've never had a hard time spotting an S2... Sideplates would be the dead giveaway for me, though. |

If it's purple, I'd bet it's an S2. |

There's a "remote" chance that it's a demon blue S3. I'm assuming (1) It's Parkway Blue (2) He talked SO into getting it and (3) He hasn't posted back because he's roaming the hills of Kentucky with it right now! |

Given a choice I would definitely choose an S2. Those things are gorgeous. |

I wish I was roaming the hills! The parking lot (what little there is) was packed Friday after work and we were out of town yesterday but I did hear them fire it up yesterday morning and bring it out. It is in fact an S2, thanks Spidey for the two screw clue. I'm home the rest of the weekend so I plan on either stopping by or walking over sometime to talk shop. On average, what's an S2 going for these days? |

I'm going to throw out $3K. There are certainly some that the owners are pretty proud of at $4K to $6K, but then again I just saw a gorgeous one list at $3250. There's one at a dealer in Cincinnati for about $2900 FWIW. |

la la la la.... I CANT HEAAARRRR YOU... la la la la... Actually, I can. If anyone remote has a serious interest in that S2 and wants a hands on report, I can run over and give it a good once over. |

Reep, Are you talking about the Cincy machine? I thought about running down there, but managed to keep myself from it. It's got a flame paint job, unfortunately, but it did look to have some bling in the cell photo I got. The guy was supposed to send me some better pics and didn't get it done. Let me know if you go down there. Wonder how low they'd go... |

Pics coming soon but they haven't come through my e-mail yet. Pawn shop doesn't know much about it, just that the PO owned it about six years and didn't ride it much. Looks like it has just over 11K on the odo. and also looks like it's spent more than a little time outdoors. The paint looks good for the age, it's a '96, but there's a fair amount of surface rust on brackets and several nuts and bolts. He's in the ballpark at $3800 so I'll let them sit on it a while and think about offering something this fall if the local chopper builder hasn't gotten it by then. And if anyone in the know has the abilities to run it the VIN is 4MZFT11HOT3000221. It must be smokin' 'cause it's got the word HOT in the VIN. They came through finally:

Some of the surface rust will knock right off with some steel wool. I'll post what 10 minutes did for my brake lever later tonight. Between the paint being in good shape and it's a T model, I think my $3K is too low. |

$3k from a pawn shop that neither knows or particularly cares about the bike is (unfortunately for us S2/tuber owners) about right. I've seen beautiful examples with asking prices at 3k-4k over the past year. No doubt it will want its fair share of money-sucking TLC, just like all older bikes. |

It's got hard bags - that doesn't make it a T model. If it had the lowers it'd be a different story. |

XL, I'm taking it as gray frame = T. Not having lowers is a good point. Something to use in negotiating a lower price. |

The S2-T was only a 1996 model. It had the charcoal gray frame and isolator plates (different from the S2). The S2-T came in only two colors. Parkway Blue (purple) and Quicksilver Metallic. You may be able to get the lowers in the color you want from any dealer but last time I checked they were pricey. they pop up on ebay from time to time but I would use that as a buying point. Another thing is it has the first shock recall and not the second. For 3K I would snag that one. Be aware that any tuber will need some work when you get it. There are some things that you should do anyway... Think replacing rubber, cables, bearings etc.... Frank |

I have no problem with the enjoying it part it's the buying it that's a sticking point. I've got the green light to start looking for a truck and I've kinda put that on the back burner. Now to figure out how to spin the story about how I need another tuber. It's going to be a hard sell with three kids. If only those bags were a little bigger, hmmmm. |
