I'm about to replace the shoe- I ordered the updated on from Al, along with the primary gasket and the gasket around the shifter. I think the shift lever bolt is stripped out in the primary, so I also have the necessary parts and tools to install a heli-coil and fix that mess once and for all! I have more oil for the primary too.

Do I need anything else? Does the primary gasket go on dry or do I need an adhesive/gasket maker?

That should be all you need. Primary shoe, gasket, seal, and one quart of your favorite tranny lube. A good trick for the install is to cut the corner out of a sandwich bag and place it over the end of the shifter shaft before you install the primary cover with the new seal. Install the cover, then carefully pull the piece of sandwich bag off the shaft. This keeps the splines on the shifter shaft from boogering up the new seal.

The new primary gasket will be rubber-coated aluminum so no sealant is necessary. You can usually reuse these gaskets at least once.

You might need a "sealing nut" P/N 7804. Mine got the nylon seal broken when I replaced my shoe. Just a thought.

Good job to do, when I pulled my adjuster shoe, the metal plate was busted in half but still holding inside the plastic, the new one looks like it would need a bit more abuse to break.

Also take a look at the crank nut while in there to make sure it hasn't backed off.

has anyone used two primary gaskets together so theres no reason to replace them if you go in again and again?.

Nallac- I have not done that, but typically 2 gaskets together is a bad idea- they tend to not seal to each other.

I put a thin layer of Hylomar on both sides of the primary gasket before install. I believe this allowed me to reuse mine a couple of times now. It also makes it easier to install with just two hands.
