In another thread I asked about my missing angled tip on V&H muffler. I decided to make one, and when I took the end cap off, I found that instead of a perforated tube, mine had just a piece of muffler pipe inside, with obviously no packing.
A previous thread here talked about how loud D&D and straight pipes are, but mine wasn't really THAT loud. It had a low tone to it, and wasn't raspy.

Well I made an angled tip out of a piece of alum pipe I had, at 15 degrees. After I put it on, I think I should of gone for 20 degrees.

Here it is on the bike.

Then I took that same pipe, which in this picture you can see is a larger diameter than the steel behind it, and flattened the end some to fit into the oval end cap, and drilled it full of 3/16" holes. I put 3 boxes of steel wool in for packing, and cranked it up. Here are the parts, with the steel tubing and size adapters that were on each end.

Well it sounded a little deeper in tone, and was a little quieter, so I took it for a ride. I was thinking that I could now crank it without everyone for 2 counties hearing me coming. Low and behold though, when I did crank it, it popped and hesitated before taking off. Not only that, acceleration from 60 in 5th was noticeably slower. The bike was running like crap, and it didn't make any sense.
My new perforated pipe was a larger diameter and I figured it would flow just as well as the steel, even with the holes drilled, which would cause some resistance. So I pulled the cap off, ran some wires through the holes in the muffler body so the perforated pipe wouldn't come out on me, and went for a ride to blow the steel wool out. It ran a little better, but still when cruising at 3K, when you cracked the throttle, it would miss, hesitate a second, and then take off. Any gear.

I thought my carb had messed up, or I had an intake leak, so I checked it with the propane test. No RPM change, even when I put the propane in the carb itself. So, even though it still makes no sense, I put every thing back the way it was with the steel pipe, except now I have the angled tip, and the bike runs normal again.
It's loud, but not too loud, and you would never guess that it is basically straight pipes. It is louder if you take the pipe out and leave the end cap off, but it doesn't sound good at all that way.

Who would have thought that this little change, would affect jetting this much? Did I make it richer, or leaner with this change?

Though I'm not an exhaust expert, and don't really want to hazard a guess, one question comes to mind: Doesn't V&H sell the end cap and the guts of the muffler separately, just for situations like this? Just throwing it out there....

I bought my baffle and the packing directly from V&H. Same price as everywhere else. Got a few (free) tips from the tech guy as well. Great service too.

From the parts it looks like you lost all your back pressure putting in that drilled core. Maybe try drilling the smaller dia core and see how it does.

The problem with that, is the smaller core is steel, and you would have to bring your lunch to drill it like I did the aluminum. I don't think that back pressure was the problem, as I lost power even on top. I think it was a change of pressure, which changed the mixture.
The question I have is did I lower the pressure with a larger diameter tube, or increase it with a tube that has holes-even though it is larger. I thought I would of lowered it, which would lean the mixture, but it acted like it richened it. The bike was already a little rich, and so a slight leaning would not have hurt.
So, even though the perforated pipe is larger, it would seem that it had more pressure than the smaller smooth pipe, making it richer-too rich to run good.

Ebutch,
Yes, there was no packing with the steel pipe since it wasn't perforated. Sounds pretty good, and you would never know it was basically a straight pipe.
