Hi Guy's

New to the forum and would love your advise. I am a previous X1 owner (2002 X1W) and I am currently looking to purchase another Tuber.

I would like to do a little 2 up touring (Only a couple of hundred K's at a time with my son who is 13 years old and weighs next to nothing).

Out of these 2 bikes what would you choose? Am I better off with the Carb instead of DDFI? I know what I'm doing with the DDFI and don't mind getting the spanners dirty. Does one bike have any real advantages over the other? Are the higher k's a concern?

What is this one? It's not an X1????

This is a nice M2, has most add ons I want.

I'm really struggling to decide....I love the look of the M2, but the other (I am assuming it's a Thunderbolt with changed front screen)has the better front shocks, more power, EFI and may be a better long distance bike.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Looking at the pictures, the first one is an S3 with the fixed fairing removed/replaced by an M2/X1 nose.

I know for a fact that the M2 is a super-capable platform. My first was a '99, bought new in '98; Kim has an '02 M2L now.

Nice thing about the S3 is, you can get OEM saddlebags for it (and this one looks like it has a Ventura rack already on it) - so if luggage is a concern, go S3.

Also - and I can't tell from the pic - later S3's were EFI and earlier ones were carb'd; all M2's were carb'd. I've never had a lick of trouble out of my carb'd tubers (currently at home: 95 S2, 98 S1W, and her M2L) and the early EFI bikes had quite a few hiccups...but either way you go, solutions are out there for any teething pains you might encounter.

M2 is tuned (with different cams) for more low end torque/less top end HP; S3 will be tuned and set up exactly like your X1 was.

Cheers, Thanks for the response. I thought it was an S3 with the M2 nose. Yes the S3 is EFI. I had a couple of small problems with my X1 EFI but I didn't mind finding solutions. The luggage would be nice for the S3 (I hate using a backpack).

have you looked at the badweb classified ads? There are some good ones from time to time.
You don't think a nice later model x-1 would work for you, even including a light-weight 13-year old 2-up from time to time? There's a nice 2001 x1 in the classified ads right now.
Nothing bad to say against an S3 or an M2, just sayin, you seem to have really liked your x1, and later years had minor gremins sorted out, as is normal for any car or bike model.

Thanks for the responses. Fahren, I'm not located in the US (I'm in Australia). Choice is limited when it comes to older Buells. (I'd love to choose one out of the classifieds).
Another X1 would be great but I am leaning towards an S3 due the the advantages it has for longer distance travel (Luggage, Upright riding position etc.)

Can anyone confirm the Seat Height of the 1999 S3? I have seen both 29.5 Inch and 31.5 Inch listed on web sites (I have a 30 Inch inseam)

Thanks Ebutch, I'm a bit of a short ass and find it hard to find bikes that I fit on!

I looked at the XB12X....Getting well over my budget though! I'm still trying to work out how I tell the wife I'm spending $9k on another bike....Just rock up home on it like the last couple of times!!. I work on the principle "It's easier to ask for forgiveness, then ask for permission" it's got me through quite a few bike and car purchases!

Buells are very expensive in OZ compared to the US. It's also very expensive to bring an import into the country yourself, even NZ is not an option.

Should I be worried about an EFI 99 model? (V's a later EFI) I'm pretty good with ECMSPY and not afraid to get my hands dirty.

Ok, need to make a decision tomorrow. It looks like I am leaning towards the S3. Just seems to suit my needs better and still looks cool. I am happy to iron out all of the bugs that might still be hiding within. The last owner was festidious and spent some serious dollars maintaining and upgrading, it looks like it was a well looked after bike. Looking forward to playing with ECMSPY again!

I'll let you all know what I buy......Can't wait!!! (I feel young again!)
