My manual shows an air filter support bracket. If I use the bracket that the Sportster uses, my air filter backing plate doesn't fit over it. The backing plate is not flat at the back but indents in at the front breather bolt section. Do I figure right that I have an earlier style that doesn't use a bracket? It seems to use the backing plate as the carb support but it only provides support at the front of the filter. The rear of the backing plate is only supported by the breather hose going through it.
I can't seem to cure a lean stutter off idle that must be a mis-aligned carb/intake. My best bet seems to be to use a Sportster bracket to align the intake and carb, then remove the bracket and install the backing plate. Or to fab up a new, flat backing plate and supports for it.
