Owner claims motor is 105 hp, are they & how can you tell if it has that motor ? Bike is very clean but has 42,000 miles, is that too much & asking for problems ? Problem is the bike is 570 miles away, long ride if it isnt what Im looking for. I know theres an ongoing argument on whether the 98 S1 was the only 105 hp one. Does anyone know for sure so I can save a trip if it isnt ?

I have seen a few tubers advertise as 103 or 105 HP... I think they are looking at the stats for a XB and just put that on there. Can you post a pic or link to an ad???

I think the 98 S3 was advertised as a 101hp at the crank.

Of course he could of added a different air cleaner of exhaust and figured he is getting 105.... If he cannot show you a dyno sheet....... Well, HP does not mean much if it is the bike you want to get,

don't let mileage scare you. if the bike is well maintained, then it should be fine. i have ~39k on my 95 s2, upgraded to the 101hp spec'd cam/heads/pistons at 10k, (which was how many miles the bike had on it when i got it), and it's fit as a fiddle. it also has the buell race ecm/intake/hedders/muffler, plus thunderslide; so it's likely closer to ~110hp...

To answer your horsepower question, 101 hp at 6000 rpm, taken from a 1998 owners manual.

And it is CRANK SHAFT HP, not rear wheel ...

My 1997 S3T CRANK SHAFT HP was 91HP(T87.0), "BUT" DYNO'ed
OEM off the show room floor at 60.5HP(T66.9) at 5600 RPM(with 7K Module) ...

The BEST that "i" could get with tuning(Timing,7K RPM Module,Tune OEM Carb.,True up intake manifold, 0.030 plug gap,OEM Air Box mods, ex. wrap, product improved OEM 1999 muffler, Drive Belt/Pri.Chain adjusted so they do not cost me HP )and 1.75 rocker arms( with OEM Cams) was 76.7HP(T74.8) at 5225 RPM ...

Thats 16.2 more HP and 7.9 lbs. more of Torque showing on the DYNO ... ...

SO, the parts bought were 1.75 rocker arms, 7K RPM Module, exhaust wrap, 1999 muffler was given to me but "i" had to fix it to my 1997 header which gave me a reversion chamber, better spark plugs, and Carb. jets/needle ...

BUELLers, "i" tune for the RPM range that "i" ride in ...

That is true... I pretty much stay away from low mileage bikes. I saw a Westwind with 111 miles or so last year. It was leaking from every thing that had fluid.

A well maintained tuber will last 100,000 miles or more. There are several people that have over 100,000 and counting.

I ride with a friend that has 80K on his 97 S3.... He rode it up to Alaska and back to Colorado last year.
