Anyone ever dealt with a check engine light that comes on at high way speeds... I have a '99 X1 Two separate times now, I have been on day rides, with no issues, and hopped on the highway to jet home, approximately 60 miles both times. When at approx. 80mph, 3-4 grand on tach. and all of a sudden the check engine light comes on... stays on until I get off highway, and drop to low RPM, then goes off, and stays off for the remainder of the in town traffic, ride home... I recently replaced the Stator, the exhaust can, and wrapped the headers, and of corse changed the fluids... Any help is much appreciated... | ||

Start with replacing the oil pressure switch ... If you run a TOOO HIGH A MICRON OIL FILTER will cause that to happen ... Have you replace'd the oil pump drive gear with the -06 one yet ... Oil and oil pump "INFO" available upon request, just e-mail me ... | ||

Read the codes.. I will have to look it up but you can short out two of the pins on the service connector and the check engine light will flash to tell you the codes.. I am at work so I cannot look until later but maybe someone that has a service manual handy can chime in.. Oh and my guess would be the IAT sensor(intake air temp) | ||

Mine did that and it turned out to be a ground on the voltage regulator. I re-checked it and cleaned the ground up, no problems since. Hopefully it's not related to the stator, That would suck to have to go back in again. Also it could be the wire on the oil pressure sensor coming loose. I have one that likes to come off all the time. | ||

As Davefl & Preybird1 said: check the CODES ... The FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL that you should have explains this and you should also have the PARTS BOOK for your YEAR/MODEL ... "i" have a 1997 model which does not have a on board computer for trouble shooting these mystery problems which means a good guess/guess's is required ... | ||

I have used the codes before, but didn't think it would work when the light turns off, I will give it a try. | ||

It will tell you the last fault codes it had even after the problem is resolved. I can check mine now and it will tell me that the errors in its head are from a faulty intake air temp sensor. This is from when I washed and re-oiled my air filter and forgot to plug the sensor back in  | ||

Yeah, old codes are stored. Do try the simple stuff first, such as loose connections, check ground connections for tightness, then progress to bigger stuff. | ||

My X1 liked to chafe the Oxygen sensor wire until I tied it up out of the way. Remember also that the oxygen sensor needs a good ground connection to work so if your headers are loose, it may throw you an oxygen sensor code. A lot of codes are "fake" Loose stuff and faulty sensors telling the brain that the world is coming to an end | ||

"AND" the first few code may not the ones you should look at first ... It could be down the code string some where ??? HEAT "KILLS" these brain box sensors witch makes them flaky ... THAT IS WHY "i" RUN A COOLING FAN ... If you ever over heat your car engine, need "i" say more !!! | ||
