thick black tar substance leaking from the exhaust header connects at cylinder. any ideas? have rear cylinder apart.

Are you sure it's from there?
I have been fooled in the past from leaks dribbling down to where you see them.
Like rocker box leaks that manifest themselves by dropping on starter or the like.
