I have the chance to get the heads, cams, intake and carb off an S1. I am sure I can get a great deal on the parts. The S1 lost 5th gear and is being used for parts to keep a HOT S1 on the road. My B in law has no use for the engine.

Is there a HP difference between the S1 and S2?

Is it worth the work?

Thanks in advance guys and gals.

No difference unless it's an S1W, then the heads, pistons and cams were different.

There is a fellow Bueller here that REALLY needs a new set of cases for his S2.
If the motor is being "parted", Please give Roadthing (Tom McCarroll) a shot at the cases.

I hate to disagree with you Bluz but didn't the S1's have Lightning heads. Not as good as Thunderstorm heads but better performance than the Sportster heads that came on the bike.

Thestig: PM me if the cases are available. It looks like I need a set.

Thanks!

S2: sportster engine. 76hp, 78lb-ft.
S1: Lightning engine - different heads/cams, compression bump. 91hp, 85 lb-ft.
S1W: first of the Thunderstorm engines - later added to S3, X1 (with EFI), and M2 (with lower RPM cams). 101hp, 90 lb-ft (exc. M2 because of the cam difference, 91/85 rating).

An S1 engine is a "half-step" above the S2 motor. An S1W Thunderstorm motor works veryvery well in an S2. I have T-storm heads, pistons, and X1 cams in my S2 with the stock heavy-flywheel bottom end and a Buell race ignition and Buell race muffler. LOVE IT.

Yeah, the lightning heads aren't anything special. Basically stock 1200 heads with extra material in the combustion chamber to get a 10:1 CR with flat-tops. You'd be just as well off with higher CR pistons with the stock S2 heads. The cams are different though.

I thought the S1 model engines went like this:
1996: Stock sporty motor just like the S2's
1997: Lightning heads
1998: Thunderstorm heads

Road thing I will ask him about the cases if he wants to get rid of them.

The reason I was thinking about usingg the S1 parts is I can get them for next to nothing. I will do some horse trading for them. As the cost will be so low that is why I am thinking about this.

Is there someplace online I can find firm hp numbers for the S1 and S2?

The 95 and 96 S2's were bone stock Sportster motors.

Hp specs are in Rat's post above.
