Hey guys, I have a very particular problem after doing the chain conversion on my 2000 M2.

While riding in a right hand turn at speed, my chain is dragging on the underside of the swingarm. Is this due to the chain being too tight? I checked the play in the chain with me on the bike and it is right around .75" which is what the conversion kit said was standard. I even changed the rear spring preload so that it is stiffer because I am a heavier rider. Anyone have this problem and figure out a remedy? I've had nothing but problems after doing the chain conversion. I've fixed all of the previous ones but this is the newest...

This is a pic of the swingarm and where it's rubbing.

Do you have the steel or aluminum arm? Looks like the aluminum later version
That is what I have - we had to grind away some of the arm to make it work.
4 years later and not a single issue. Thats with the shock replaced by a steel bar and half of the wheelie bars mounted to the arm (lower are welded right to the arm)

Didnt have to take too much out, but it took some grinding.

Dont know what youre doing the conversion for, but I'll offer this advice: If it is for drag, I am running 19/51 sprockets and its great for 1/4 mile racing.

Hope I was of some help to you

Goodnight.

Yes, I do have the aluminum arm. It wouldn't bee to hard to grind it down, so that's a good thought. Not gonna lie, did the conversion merely for looks.

I'll look into grinding some of that material away. Thanks!!

What is wrong with mounting a piece of plastic like what your primary chain rubs on !!!

Most dirtbikes have teflon sliders mounted on the swingarms.
Perhaps one could be chopped to fit your M2?

Buellistic:

The chain is grinding on the swingarm when I'm in a turn, that is upsetting the suspension...I could also possibly break the chain doing it. I need clearance, not something to rub on.

What you need is a chain tensioner to take all that chain slap out. Get rid of the slack and you can get rid of the slap.

That is correct Cyclonecharlie, "BUT" no one ever made one ...

There was one made for the SPORTSTER, "BUT" there is no frame at the rear engine mount on a BUELL ...

The way the swing arm geometry is on a BUELLthe BELT/CHAIN, one adjusts the tension on the tight spot(no up and down movement, "BUT NOT TIGHT) with the rear axle, swing ar}m mounting, and center of counter shaft in straight line ...

When you get done, with no ride sitting on the bike the BELT/CHAIN appears to be too loose, "BUT" it is not ...

Not only is there what is call slap on TUBE FRAME BUELLs, with a chain you get a side to side motion with a chain(BELTS do not have it) ...

That is why "i" said that ...

A spring loaded chain tensioner would definitely help with slap, but the problem I am having isn't slap...

The chain is literally grinding on the bottom of the swingarm because my rear suspension is being heavily loaded in a fast corner. I think grinding the material away until it clears may be my solution. Either that, or somehow get a different spring on there. I unfortunately don't have the cash to spend 400 bucks on a Penske or any of the other aftermarket setups that may come with beefier springs.

Buellistic: I could easily make a spring loaded chain tensioner for the M2. It would mount where the chain rub goes for the Baker conversion set up.

you could also make a run to your local motorcross shop and see if you might be able to adapt one of those plastic pieces to the top of you swingarm to keep the chain from rubbing so bad. every dirt bike ive had has had at least one.

I like your bike, especially the seat. You just need a crazy 3-piece headlight and you could have a poor man's Hellcat! Lol

Is there enough room to run off set sprockets?

Tex: I should probably do that for the top of the swinger...do you know what they're called? I guess they're just chain rubs, right? (I don't know shit about motocross)

Phelan: I know, right. I started "fIGHTWRESTLE" before I ever saw any confederate bikes...kinda made me laugh when I saw it. About the light though, I love the 7" round stocker on there...but I've been wanting to switch to a rectangular light that's just as big...they look awesome.

46: I highly doubt it, but I haven't thought about that route yet. I've considered making a spondon style swingarm but I don't have the tools to bend the tubing like I would need to...although when there's a will there's a way. I'm just glad the bike is back to running condition.

I have a track day this weekend so I probably won't be working on the M2 too much, but I will next week.

Sure is.

You ever been to www.motohouston.com?

There are guys on there that are always doing rides up close to the woodlands. I rarely ever go though cause it's like over an hour away to ride some somewhat decent road. I utterly despise Houston for that...all this land and nowhere decent to ride a motorcycle like they were designed to ride.

Never been to the site, I'll check it out.

And yes, houston is a sh$#hole when it comes to good, windy riding roads. It seems EVERY single road is straight and intersects at 90 degrees with every other road with a light or stopsign. The lack of elevation change also sucks.

Doesn't stop me from riding though. just dont look at pictures of the roads around colorado or west virginia.

I'm originally from Pittsburgh. I've only been here 3.5 years. So, I know what good roads are, haha. Which is specifically why I'm driving the van up to Pittsburgh in July for vacation...gonna be loaded with the 1125R and the M2. Probably going to hit up West Virginia and the surrounding areas...I can't wait.

Hybrid: that's what I planned on doing since you said so. Made the most sense. I need to move the upper chain guard up too (mad it so the chain wouldn't hit the damn brake line and rub through). I'll probably be doing that along with cutting the exhaust back a tad because I'm dragging it on the ground and already had to reweld the mounting tab...not cool. Thanks!

Tornado: What Hybrid said.

Zt: That's crazy man. I lived in Baldwin/Whitehall, 15 minutes from the city, most my life.
