Hi, I just finished my new tail section and found that the old lock mechanism does not work so well. By that I mean that it is loose and sloppy and will chew up my nice tail section. I remember that some on the BW had used velcro to solve the seat (lock) hold down issue, My question is, what can be done with the stock set up if I don't want to use velcro? Is there an aftermarket solution, rebuild kit, ACE hardware replacement?

Zenbiker, take the old lock down to a HW store and find a replacement. I did that with one of my S2s and I think (memory is going) that I got it at Lowes. It sounds like the lock is moving in the hole???? If that is the case I have used rubber gaskets on the bottom to fix that. You can add or remove washers to adjust it.

I made a brace for mine. The lock is a circle with two flats on it; I made a strap out of a piece of sheetmetal to fit and lock it in place, and it points to the back of the bike (inside the bodywork). I drilled a hole (it was painful) in the bodywork about an inch behind the lock itself and ran a single OEM allen buttonhead screw through the bodywork and the metal tab, to keep it from rotating in the bodywork.

Looks stock, keeps the lock from spinning in the bodywork and chewing up the fiberglass and paint...and still doesn't hold the seat for shit. It's a less-than-perfect design; either that or BOTH of my Corbins suck LOL. The OEM seat doesn't like to stay put either, though....

I may look into a late-tuber-style screw-thru-the-bottom setup...but even as-is, the seat doesn't move with my bodyweight on it, only if I'm next to the bike in the garage and fiddling with it.

I haven't ever had a seat hold down. The Mickey Mouse set-up it came with didnt actually reach far enough to engage the slot in the seat. The seat stays in place because I'm sitting on it. Haven't fallen off yet, although it is on my to-do list.

To fix it, not to fall off.

i used thick oring instead of gasket. hate to say it but velcro is a must (seat fell off at a right light ) better safe than sorry

I haven't had a seat lock in a long time. It flew out on my trip to Colorado Nov '08. I used Velcro with my Corbin and filled in the hole and indention to make it a smooth tail.

I havn't had a functional seat lock on my Parkway Blue bike for the last 75,000 miles.
Like Eric it stays in place because I'm sitting on it.It was never a problem until I put both of my S2's on a narrow trailer,end to end with the PB bike backwards.When I got up to speed on the interstate I watched in horror as my nearly new Corbin went flying under the wheels of a Simi.I have since kept a flat bungie on the replacment seat.I tried velcro but couldn't find a location that worked on the Corbin.

Thanks for all of the input guys, I really do appreciate everyones take on this. I think that I will go the route of finding rubber/plastic washers and rebuild parts at the local hardware stores, as I would like to have a lock that looks stock. If I get it figured out, I will post something in the KV and update this thread stating so.

Here is what I did... Just a note, the seat is a Baldwin but the seat pan is from a corbin.














Hopefully you can see how I did the velcro. It may help to do the lock and the velcro..

Is a real problem with the seat lock is that it can cause cracking in the tail section around the lock? I have seen a few S2's with cracking around the seat lock. My lock works but I don't use it for that reason after putting on the new tail section.
