I'm working on trying to get the bike ready for the S2 gathering. Saddlebag fail-safes are on the must do list. I'm going to take Frank's bungee cord inner bag retaining to the next level with some web straps and buckles attached to the inner hard bag. Then I'm thinking of using some soft straps and plastic buckles to fail-safe the lid latches.

What kind of additional support do the bag mounts need if any? I have heard people talk about the bag wag or having them flap like wings. I have not road much with the bags on, and they seem solid except for the lower front corner.

I saw Joe's added supports and Onahog's brace running between the two bags. What have others done or what kind of mount failures have people had?

I like Joe's idea. I'll incorporate that to the busted set of bags I have when I start repairing them. I wish I would've started on them before. It'd be nice to use 'em lol.

Hmmmmm. I'm new to this issue, although I have heard the cases are not "ideal." Could someone please point to older threads/solutions for the issues that have come up, for an S2 newbie such as myself?

Someone at th S2 Round-up last year had affixed tabs that could be used to strap a sleeping bag or jacket to the top of the saddlebag. That would also serve as a fail-safe. Doing the same for mine is on my to-do list this week, I hope.

I think the tabs are OEM from the S3 bags, if they're the one's I'm thinking of.

I'll have to take some pics of my support setup, and of my lid tethers....

Possibly, my failure was caused buy one of the locking latch nuts coming loose.

I know many people have had them pop open so maybe they can pipe up with their failure causes.

I know Joe's popped open at Homecoming but I do not remember why. Court has talked about his flying open on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The locking mechanism is just a poor design and I would highly suggest a fail safe.

Come to think about it, Onahog put EGlide latches on his... The pictures are somewhere around here.

I read all the tails of bags coming open at all the wrong times. I have a couple of simple fail-safes to secure the bag liners and a fail-safe latch method.

I had seen Joe's brackets and Onahog's additional bracket and recall conversations about bag wag.

Sounds like the latching is the primary problem and the bag mounting is relatively sound if the spring pins are sound.

I don't think mine popped open; I think I failed to latch one with a key, and the tether saved it from opening and dumping all over the parking lot.

Which, by the way, I've started doing on purpose...the tethers work perfectly and keep the lids on nice and tight. In good weather anyway (although...S2 bags are about as watertight as cheesecloth to begin with LOL).

I'll take a pic of the tethers right now, actually...sitting on the deck having a margarita, but I can break into my routine and take a pic for the good of other S2'ers ; )

Sorry, cell phone (crappy) pics...

First is an overview shot, shows the narrow lids. I have the knurled nut installed on the wide lids as well, in the same place (about 1/8" from the bag base):





Next is a closeup of the knurled nut. I installed it "backwards", or knurled side (wide side) to the fiberglass. This way I can slip the cable off the nut without having to unscrew it or anything. It does hold the cable in place, though, when I need it:





I used the stock lid-tether knurled nuts on the lids, so they'd be black...and put the Home Depot (brass) nuts on the inside of the bag, for the actual lid tether. The cables I used are actual lid-hinge tethers.

But gawd did it hurt drilling a hole in each of four saddlebag lids : )

I also want to say, the braces to the passenger footpegs ELIMINATED bag-wag, even with the wide lids and fully loaded like I was for Daytona this year (camping out of the S2). Most of the wag comes from the poor mount system combined with fiberglass flex. Put a bottom mount and brace on? No flex, no wag.

Yesterday




It is the same bag that opened at the 25th. I noticed that the lock and latch are not perfectly aligned although it held up on the 200 mile trip home today. Yesterday they came open about 50 miles into a 300 mile trip due to the rough roads in Pueblo.

I put those hooks on (glad I did) but I was not going to because I thought I had it sorted (well, I did one problem only to get another).

Frank, steal away. The "system" worked out real well on the trip. The inner straps let use fill the bag liners and cinch them in tight and the outer straps and buckles did their job well. I some how managed to get on of the locks turned half way and the key came out. I could get the key back it to be able to turn the latch, so just used the outside strap and buckle. It did the job great. I did fold the end of the straps a few times and stitched them down so the buckles could not come off too.

Here it is... I only used one strap per bag..

I did not drill any new hole since I already had the bungee hooks on there.

I just picked up a couple of Harley tour bag latches. Looks like they will work.

The wrap around backpack strap I have been using is just not up to S2 standards.

Hi folks,
I'm getting ready to head to the dragon for some good clean S2T fun! I think I need to have a failsafe in place for the bags on the S2T. It looks like the quickest route is to copy what Frank and Loren have done. Is this still the state of the art fix for these? If so, can you suggest a source for the bungee hooks that you used?
