I went to my local grocery store last week and when I come out the store a buggy was up against my factory breadbox,it left some scuffs, the surface under the factory finish looks smooth where the paint flaked off.I know this is not wrinkle paint,is it splatter paint like used inside trunks? I'd like to refinish the entire cover but have no idea what to get to get the factory rough look.

on the airbox? The airbox isn't painted stock. It's just plastic.

With that been said I guess the smooth surface is where the buggy rubbed it slick. So the roughness is part of the plastic mold I would assume

You should be able to still purchase just the outer cover new. It's not a cheap as a can of paint but I'm considering this as I have the exact same scuffs that you have. It's weird the way it scuffs smooth like that!

If I cannot find any paint to get it close to original, like you I'll buy a new cover or a Forcewinder intake when my funds get right.I can live with the scuffs but considering how nice the bike looks it just kinda stands out.

The airbox covers ARE painted with the same industrial coating used on the composite rear inner fenders. I've never seen one come out of the factory that wasn't. But I'm not an expert like some folks here, so maybe there are some texture molded parts out there. I don't believe you can get the paint in spray can. You can sand it all off, and paint the part like any plastic part. Why not take the opportunity presented and make the bike your own?
Good luck!

Kmbuell,Thought it was paint the way it flaked off.I have a buddy that runs a collision/restoration center,he may have something in mind or know the finish applied. Thanks

Reviving an old thread. Did you guys come up with anything. It definitely has a coating and a good bit of mine scraped off when I got too close with the lawn mower in the garage. I'm tempted to take it to a body shop and get it painted it gloss black to match the body work. That may look good.
