The fork oil seals on my S1W are bonded and stuck to the outer WP fork tube. It may have happened when I was heating the outer tube to remove the inner tube. Any tips for removing melted/stuck seals and seal material? The seal on one tube has already been wasted and reduced to bits of rubber that are stuck to the fork tube. The other tube has not been removed. Any tips to cleanly remove it? | ||

Why would you heat the fork tubes to remove the inner tube???? I'm guessing you do not own a owners manual? Seems like you managed to remove the inner slider tube so you can see the seal and seal area. Use a wooden tool to scrape off as much material as possible then a scotch bright pad to remove the remaining rubber... | ||

The manual says to heat the outer tube to expand it and allow the inner tube to release. I'll try the scotch bright. It may be tough because rubber is stuck inside the grooves. Thanks.... | ||

Sorry, the newer manuals (for the newer bikes) doesn't say anything about heating the tubes. All it says it to pull the tubes apart... | ||

Wishing I'd had left them alone and just changed the fork oil. The seals were fine before I pulled the inner tube. The DU bushing's teflon is fine too. Now I have to order seals. | ||

i used heat gun not a torch, doesnot take very much heat slides right out sorry about your mess. maybe try some brake fluid to soften them up | ||

OK I got it out. Note to self. Carefully read manual first. Manual says that oil seal will remain on the INNER tube. Since I missed the step that says "remove oil seal retainer ring". Leaving that ring in, was stupid on my part. I thought I was reading that it would stay on the OUTER tube. The inner tube will pull out around the oil seal, but risks damaging other stuff. Luckily everything looks intact. With a little more heat and a couple slotted screwdrivers I was able to remove the seal. Now I just have wait 2 weeks for new seals from American Sportbike. Live and learn. | ||

Scs1: Of course this is a little late in tell you this ... If you drain the forks over night and put the same amount back in each fork you have effectively changed the fork oil as the additives have been replenished ... | ||

This was a misshap and an example of how ADD and tech manuals don't mix well. It is my first fork rebuild and accidents happen. Never the less, I'm gonna delete this thread so nobody confuses it with useful knowledge. | ||
