Mr. Wizard,
In my opinion, you missed one thing.
You should have cut down the cam cover when you had the motor out.
Did you use braided stainless oil lines?

no I wanted green braided ones but I found a buell race header for the bike and that was more important to me than the oil lines. It started right up without missing a beat, had to rig up a temp. gas tank but it runs like a champ!!!
I'm wondering about cutting the cam cover? Would like more info on that please.

If you are careful and pay attention to the details it can go really well. Plus you'll remove about a pound of fat from your bike.

Here's before and after, I've got a couple in-between pics to to help with the whole process, should you want them.

A picture's worth a thousand words:

Don't forget to remove your timer cover, then the timing plate, then the screw that secures the cup to the drive cam. Else you'll pull the cam out and have to pull your rocker boxes off to reset everything, and that's a real pain. So don't forget and it will be a much easier job.

You can buy that silver sandcast finish in a can at the HD shop, same as the texture black. Price is up to $20+ these days, I chose black as I hope to have the entire engine blacked out some day, for now it's just the covers.

Thoroughly degrease and clean inside and out then spray the new finish on for a factory look (after filing and sanding the saw marks off). You know you can do the coolest finishing work with a roto-zip is you are careful?

Cure the stuff in the oven when the wife is out and open some windows when done, it does say it's a powder coat so the heat helps, then good to go. I let it cure for a week or two longer since it has peeled on other peoples bikes and I wasn't in a hurry.

The Bike looks great so far Mister Wizard, I don't love green but I think what you've done really works!

I haven't been able to roll it outside yet to take some good pictures of it. The flash on the camera makes it look alot lighter than what it really is. It is finally clearing up outside so I am going to roll it outside today and clean up the garage. I will take some pictures when it is outside.

I also have a number of cut down cam cover photos.
Mine is off my M2 right now so I can take some more pictures if you want.
I't really pretty easy to do, just takes a bit of time to clean up the saw marks.
I used a band saw to remove the big hunks then switched to a air die grinder, then finished up with a file.
NRHs also will do the cut for you on their CNC mill. Around $100 if memory serves.

I could mill it off myself, I want to run it on the dyno and see how the cams perform. I might end up changing the cams and would have to take the cover off anyways. I rolled the bike outside today to clean and organize the garage and took some better pics. One question though, the race header I bought doesn't have the bracket for the y mount on the front. Is there something that I can get? I would just weld one on but I don't have a tig welder (yet). Any suggestions?

Might could do that except for the timing wire that comes out the middle of the bottom of th cover, don't know how you'd avoid that with it still on the bike, maybe though. Also that the webbing on the back makes such a good guide for where to cut. You would also have to be very careful to move your other wiring out of harms way and also not cut oil lines or your oil pump.

With care and the right tool itmight be done, how comfortable are you doing that? I'd probably want to use the roto-zip, or something like that.

Hey Mr wizard,
Very nice bike!

Maybe you can use an exhaust clamp to mount the front bracket on the exhaust tube ,so you don,t have to weld it!
if you weld the bracket ,make sure there is no stress on it because it can crack the exhaust tube
or weld it on some bigger plate or something to absorb the vibes when mounted on the bike!

Looks good. If you are interested in riding it out to the Slimey Crud Run with me and my M2 let me know. I try and do it every year with my Dad and his sporty. It's a great ride! May 2nd I live in Neenah but my Dad has a shop right across from Waverly Beach.

With snow and crappy weather coming this weekend I have a little time yet! It was really hard to hear it run and not ride it. I put a knew carb on it and the first stop is to stocks so I can dyno tune it. If he doesn't get them done I might have to take you up on that just so I can get it tuned in. My hanger for the race header won't be here till Monday so not being able to ride it right now is probly a good thing. Do you still do the LED lights?

No, I am out of the LED business. Where you are located, I would skip Stocks and go straight to Hoban Brothers. They have a GREAT Buell race program and are close by. I am secretly wishing my motor dies next year so I can take it to them.

At stocks I can do the dyno myself!!! I live just outside of Manitowoc and my girlfriend works at stocks. Would you be interested in giving me a hand on LED's for my bike?

Yeah, I can help you out with the LED stuff. At the very least you can see what I did and I can get you the sources I used. Over all I used about 100 lights on more than 10 strips to get it right. It took about 40 hours of work, but the end result was worth it. (in my opinion at least)
