Starting to think about chopping my cam cover and painting both the primary and cam covers black. Just wondering if its worth throwing new cams in while im in there. Its a 00 M2. I think that some buells come with the screaming eagle cams i just dont know which bikes do and dont. Ill be replacing the oil pump gear with brass as well. Any input? Also, any tips on preping for paint? (Message edited by psyclown on March 27, 2010) |

The X1s have .497 lift cams in them. Good for a few ponies up top. |

I'd look for '00-'01 cam and primary covers, factory powdered coated textured black. Very durable and easy to refresh to new like finish with S100 engine brightener. |

As Jramsey suggests, I found a stock black primary cover at a dealership take-off part sale cheap, touched it up and bolted it on. Texture black spray is under $20 if you are trying to keep your cost down on the covers. I used PJ1 to degrease the [cam] cover after completing the cutting and shaping, inside and out then washed with soap and water (sprayed out with compressed air), and then warmed it in the oven (on warm) before painting mine. Let it dry per the instructions on the can (from the HD shop) then cured in the oven, then hit it with a second light coat and repeated. I had the cover off for a while and let the paint fully cure (with a few afternoons in the sun) before I put it all back together. I normally wouldn't have been quite so anal about curing but have read others that had the paint come off and I really wanted to be done with it once I put it all back together. If I still had access to a blast cabinet I would have bead blasted it before paint too. Texture black is a great looking finish, I have a hard time getting road grime off of it though. |

Phelan - Are the X1 cams a bolt-on add or are other mods necessary? LBuggles- You didn't sand blast or sand the covers before paint? How has the paint held up? |

You have a '00 M2, right? Then '00-'02 X1 cams will bolt in. The '91-'99 XL/Buell cams have a different pitch in the teeth which requires a different pinion gear. |

After band saw and belt sander in the shop I used a roto-zip for shaping and trimming, then dremel tool with cutting and sanding bits, then final shaping and hand finish with fine toothed files. Original finish was the silver textured finish (looks like sand cast). I cleaned as I described above then painted. It's holding up fine, all surfaces had texture to them, nothing was silky smooth as i knew the black texture paint would hide minor irregularities. I've got some close-ups off the bike and pictures during the process, I'd be happy to email them or post them up here. |

I had my side covers both Black powder coated. I like the Gloss Black myself. I wish I had the inner cases glossy black. would make cleaning easier. I had S1 cams put in my M2 along with a six speed baker. REX |
