Check for signal at the coil. NOT the plug wires, the chassis / control wires. You should get a flashing test light.

Plug wires on right? Even though it's a dual-fire system, you could still wire it backwards...

Also check for signal coming out of the ignition pickup. Just 'cause it's turning doesn't mean it hasn't given up the ghost.

I'm with Ratbuell, Check the timing module under the cover. If the epoxy is bubbled near where the wires come in, It is more than likely toast.

Did you bypass the clutch safety switch on the left side and the kill switch on the right hand side?
I would eliminate those two things first.

Are the injectors squirting?
Will it run off a prime of ether?

another intermitent fault i had was the bank sensor killing the bike as i was riding, toggle the ignition and it would start, but stop a few yards later.
It can be turned off in the ecm with ecm spy to eliminate it.

My initial thought was the ignition sensor since I snapped one of the tabs on the back when I put it back together, not completely off but after it stopped I thought that had to be it. Just put in a new one this week to no avail. I'm after a brand spankin' new pair of plugs just to rule that out. I've got two pair but one was a back up that had about 1000 miles on them, should've worked but you never know.
These are all great ideas, I know, I've tried them. Won't run off ether, injectors are firing and I'm getting fuel. You should hear it after it cranks a while then gets that one intermittent spark. KA-BOOM. LOL Scares the wife to death in the house watching television.
Gotta cook at church tonight so no wrenching this evening. I'm taking Friday off so maybe I can catch up.

Thanks again fellas
Michael

Welllll...seems Ratbuell and Buelistic nailed it. SPEED SENSOR! Got to spend a little time in the garage this evening and prodded the lines going into the coil, no juice. I took the battery back out, disconnected the speed sensor and put the battery back in. Cranked it a few times and the spark testers were showing spark so I buttoned up what needed to be buttoned and it's trying to turn over. Now I just need to fine tune it and do a TPS reset and see what happens.

Thanks for all the ideas guys, I'll let you know again when it's running on it's own.

Well, it's up and running, idling anyway. Idles fine but goes to popping and cracking with any throttle so seems like I'm sucking air in somewhere. Like I said, it ran fine before this so I'm thinking it's either the O2 sensor in the pipe or the air sensor in the intake. It will run one day, one way or another.

The last time I had symptoms like you described, i.e., cracking/popping at ANY throttle position, I had messed up while doing the TPS reset procedure. Versus occasional pop/crack which was due to intake seal leaking...
But then again you probably already knew all this...
