I know this may sound silly but I removed my piston on 2000 Buell x1. Thought it would be easer to reinstall cylinder once piston was installed in the cylinder. Just slide the pin back in and put the clip on. Well I have shot two clips across the garage so far and do not want to damage the piston. Anyone know where I can rent the tool to install the C clip. I do not want to purchase one I will probably never need it again. | ||

I have a small flathead screwdrive that has a slight bend in it. Works good with needle nose pliers. | ||

A cheapie Snap-on giveaway screwdriver with a notch filed in the tip and polished does mine. | ||

Ditto on needle nose and screwdriver....and lots of patience. It seems like if I used a notch at the top to hold one end of the clip I could work the other end into the opening at the bottom, but I'm having a little trouble remembering exactly how that worked. | ||

Keep the clip overnight in the freezer. | ||

I'm With JR pliers and pics, you can "wind them" in to the grove, pay close attention here, or you get to do more repairs. they are a pain if you deform them in any way I would not use them, therir cheap but crucial. | ||

Wear safety glasses. I had one fly out and hit me right in the eyeball! | ||

#1 - wear safety glasses I did my install the same way, and was able to get the clips on with my thumbs and some assembly lube. Cover everything with lube, then get one tip of the clip in place and hold it in place. Now just push from that point and make your way around to the other tip. Hope that makes sense. Good luck, and +1 to replacing the clips if they become damaged. | ||

Still fighting this. I got them in but the openings are at the six oclock position. Should I remove and replace? How critical is this. | ||

Your fine,6 or 12 oclock is the preferred position. | ||

LOL. Reminds me of when I bought an EBay piston, and left a note on the auction payment saying "if you could throw in an extra circlip, I am sure I'll appreciate it when I am assembling the bike and shoot one across the garage". Of course he didn't include it. You should have seen the look on my face when I was reassembling the bike, and shot a circlip across the garage. Classic! (Found it, after about 20 minutes of looking, behind a cabinet that was under the wheelbarrow) | ||
