I'm in the process of rebuilding my forks after powdercoating the tubes flat black and I have two problems (2002 X1W).
The first one is that I screwed up the factory setting on the damper kit. Does anyone know how many threads below the lock nut is the factory setting?

The second one is that the manual says to put the spring's tapered side up. I looked hard, put the dial caliper to the springs, and to me they seems the same all the way through. Can anyone help me with this please?

Thanks a lot in advance for any help!!!

I will post pics, it's going to be a while, I still have to powdercoat my swingarm, primary cover, and rear subframe.
I also fabricated some brackets to do a dual headlight conversion.

I broke one of the damper units and have to buy a new one, is it going to be at factory setting when I buy it new?

Thanks in advance.

I also need to replace the fork oil (and change the seals while I'm there) but I did not realize you could actually do the rebuild without the need to remove the entire fork assembly off the bike. Looks like you just removed the spring and the damper, from the bottom I assume, and left the forks on the bike.
Sorry could not help you with your questions.

Oldog, thanks, you're a life saver!
I got the shop manual but all it says is not to play with the lock nut so you don't screw the factory settings (which I did).
Anyway, from your pics (if you didn't touch the blue part and the lock nut), it looks like factory setting is the lock nut bottomed all the way down.
Thanks again, much appreciated!
