Do you have an updated detent plate (or pawl)? Stock on 2000 and up. Part# 33656-90A (same # as old one but with an A after). That could be one culprit, as it was re-shaped to make shifts easier, and reduce false neutrals.

Or you could have an issue with the shift drum pins. They can back out.

Can be the above or the detent plate clip has broken / fell off.

Many fixes are available. But I highly recommend Baker Drivetrain.

While you are in there you can also upgrade the primary shoe.

OH! And since this is old school, a broken primary chain tensioner can lead to a plate of metal stuck in the oddest places, and causing the oddest problems...

"Stock on 2000 and up. Part# 33656-90A"

Does that apply to ALL 2000 MY bikes (X1 in my case) or it was a mid-year upgrade?
My production date is Nov '99.
I've been worrying about this since I first heard about this issue.
Thanks.

It was stock on all 2000.

But it doesn't solve the problem of broken clips or moving drum pins.

You can modify the existing unit by drilling, tapping and staking or purchase a Baker kit.
